The whole thing is fishy. Guy's missing, has a kid with a girl from 2015, but then she got married in 2022, but she was still dating missing guy? And now there's a GoFundMe to find him? Weird.

Yikes...
This talk could all be squashed with some legitimate sources linked, such as a local news bulletin or something at all with contacting the police.
I try to assume no one would be that inherently evil to scam good people out of money, and there would be some legitimate costs incurred in truly searching for someone - such as paying a private dog tracking service or private investigator. OP possibly being jobless could easily be completely unrelated, for all we know he is financially stable but doesn't have the extra means to drop thousands on searching for a friend.
I hope this turns out to be a legitimate call for help with a happy ending

I think GoFundMe has a built-in delay between when the collection ends and when the funds are dispersed. Having only been active for a short time - $$ is probably still in that holding period and can easily be reversed back to the individuals who contributed.

He said it would be used for drones, billboards, etc. They way he did it was a bit off though.
