This and isn't really more complex than that. Raise MW and that housing scales up accordingly and you're back in same boat

if one doesnt have a disability, over the age of 20 or so they should be able to make over $20/hour

1.7 million people work minimum wage jobs.
A quick Google search shows there’s currently over 5 million teenage workers in the US. What do you think the odds are that the vast majority of those 1.7 million minimum wage jobs are held by 16-17 year old kids working at a burger joint part time after school, living at home with mom and dad, and at best may pay part of their car payment insurance, or cell phone bill as far as bills go? And that’s only if their parents have the good sense to use this first job to teach their kids how to (1) keep a budget and (2) pay bills.

I know that is the correct stat but it just seems like there would be more, considering you're talking about every Walmart worker, fast food and restaurant worker.
Except I’m not. Even Walmart doesn’t pay min wage.
Where they are shitty is that they don’t employ associates full time so they don’t have benefits.
Ditto fast food. Hell, I believe starting pay at McD is 9-11/hour.
Restaurant workers are guaranteed mini wage, but must go past that with tips anyway.

Are there 1.7 million better paying jobs out there?
Absolutely. Even if you get a job at McDonalds, unless you’re just stupid as a bag of hammers or lazy as shite, they will give you a raise within a few months of being hired. Again, as I said earlier, if you’re a heathy adult in the US without some sort of mental or physical handicap, there is absolutely no reason for you to be making minimum wage.

The real issue is that it hasn’t kept pace with inflation for years. That $3 in 1985 still buys more than today’s minimum wage
Purchasing power has increased by nearly 50% for the lowest class.
Would you and mr perfect like to go on about how well informed you are on the facts of this issue you are?

Why do people that make minimum wage need to follow this rule?
Hell, when I bought my first house I was pushing the limits at 38%
It meant having to avoid eating out as much until I got a couple of merit increases/promotions but it was certainly not prohibitive.

The average Walmart worker makes $14.75 an hour. Department managers make $24.70 an hour. And average pay for a store manager is $175,000 per year.

If we stop letting in illegal aliens and inflating prices through welfare, housing end other entitlements then rent would be cheaper.

Are you actually suggesting that the purchasing power of $7.25 today is nearly 50% greater than the purchasing power of $3.35 in 1985?
Blatant lie. No basis for this in reality.
Posted on 7/16/20 at 10:55 pm to TBoy
No. I’m suggesting that the market, independent of minimum wage, has given the lowest classes more. That the argument that lower class pay hasn’t been inflation adjusted is an absurd one detached from reality
Any discussion of affordability using mini wage as the defining metric has sophistry built into it.

Are there 1.7 million better paying jobs out there?
But, since you asked, yeah. There are. Bureau of Labor Stats says that as of July 7th, there were 5.4 million job openings in the U.S. Since we know that less than 2% of ALL jobs pay min-wage......that means over 5 million jobs out there that pay better than min-wage.
Do you have any other weak sauce to come at me with?

There are a fair number of adults in that group. But even the adults, MANY are part timers just working for a little extra $$$
The number of actual humans trying to make it ON THEIR OWN on min wage is nothing more than statistical noise

Sorry but jobs tend to be open because people don’t want them. I would Imagine a higher percentage of those jobs are minimum wage.
The assertions that everyone making minimum wage can just go get a better job and teenagers can just take their place if pretty fricking ignorant

quote:You seem completely stuck on not being able to comprehend that people in 2020 basically don't make the minimum wage.
Are you actually suggesting that the purchasing power of $7.25 today is nearly 50% greater than the purchasing power of $3.35 in 1985?
You're trying to compare a wage that nearly 15% of the people in the early 80s made, to a wage that roughly 2% make now.
The group of people who made min-wage in the early 80s are making 10 bucks a fricking hour today. They ARE NOT MAKING $7.25.
How are you not fricking comprehending this?

No. Most jobs that are open are because we can't fricking fill them. I routinely have jobs remain open for multiple weeks because people simply aren't qualified for them.
quote:Hell, let's pretend your imagination isn't horse shite. Let's pretend that 70% of the currently open jobs are min-wage.
I would Imagine a higher percentage of those jobs are minimum wage.
OK. That means the answer to your original question is STILL yes. Ya know. Because math and shite.
Wanna try some more?
quote:The assertion is that basically no one makes min-wage........a ton of the 1.7 actually ARE teenagers........or adults doing it part time for few extra bucks. The number within that 1.7m who are actual adults who are trying to LIVE on that money are pretty much fricking unicorns.

quote:If 1 person making minimum wage is supposed to live in a fair market rental, then who in the world is supposed to live in below market rentals?
the average minimum wage worker in the U.S. would need to work almost 97 hours per week to afford a fair market rate two-bedroom
Posted on 7/16/20 at 11:36 pm to John88
Useless. An adult making min wage probably isnt responsible enough to rent a place.
