Yeah, I should've rephrased.
"You" = admins in education

if you can't recognize that there are stark differences in our culture, education, and society from when you grew up, you need to be checked into a mental institution dude
I say that with sincerity

You are very likely part of the problem.
Boomers and their assumptions.
1) I do ACTUALLY have an MA in literature, and YES I did want to be a College Professor, I quickly exited when I saw what it was really like, however....
2) I worked in administration/online learning and trying to help lowering the cost of college and hoping to help people get back to college since everyone needed a degree. But I knew I couldn't do enough...
3) So I sold out and left for software/startups
quote:
I've met very few people in Education who had any clue as to how business or the real world actually functioned.
This isn't wrong, and most of these, again, are Boomers. (Edit: I should say "were" Boomers. The explosion of services tuition was mainly a 1999-2012-ish timeline when Boomers were the primary administrative workforce in institutions. That expansion has slowed as Gen Xers moved into positions.)
quote:
The extraordinary lack of cost control and integrity that I have run across at bastions of higher learning is incredible.
Driven by artificially driving up "demand" via free federal funds/student debt.
quote:
I am not at all surprised at the ridiculous price of tuition.
You also shouldn't be surprised that the value of a degree is less, regardless of increased cost because more people have degrees now. All Boomer policies.

We actually agree on more than things than I think we realize.
Just blaming boomwrs for everything is oversimplification, but you know that. ( I think)

True.
Just as it’s true that “You are 100% personally responsible for every life outcome and situation you ever find yourself in and external factors beyond your control don’t exist” is an oversimplification/complete falsehood.

Ah, you're one of those. That's sad. We need Lit degrees, we need Chemistry degrees. We need engineering degrees.
Thinking that everyone only needs a STEM degree is JUST as misguided as people who think Feminist Theory degrees are valuable. There are a few important types of thinking that we should heartily encourage. Literature/Rhetoric is one of them.
You realize Literature/Rhetoric was an original college degree in this country?
Law
Literature/Rhetoric
Anatomy/Medical
Science
Divinity
Do you also realize that Literature is the 2nd or 3rd most popular degree for Business Exec positions?
Probably not, Boomer.

What does this even mean? That I didn't want to work? Or that professors don't work?
A college professor would be a great job if it were treated correctly and if the 60s wouldn't have ruined college and politicized it. Studying the great works of literature, and understanding how we communicate ideas across time is an extremely important and human endeavor. As a subject now, it isn't that anymore.
quote:
Nailed it.
What it was "really like," means an overly politicized environment that over-valued personal research and under-valued the actual act of teaching the right subject matter to the right kinds of students free of expectations.
That comment has nothing to do with the supposed work, and more to do with what it had become as an industry.

Roger can’t think back to that age because he was too loaded to actually develop memories.

And this discipline, along with History, Psychology, Philosophy, etc. have all been co-opted by intersectional and critical race theory, all used to to justify the social justice movement.
The humanities are dead. They have been for at least 20 years now.

In all seriousness, I completely agree. I once noodled on pursuing a PhD and being a college professor, but all of these same concerns existed then and are much, much worse now.
I might consider being an adjunct professor, "instructor", perhaps volunteering to lead specialized seminars in military history, but a full track/tenured professor? Too much sugar for a dime.

A side gig as an adjunct teaching online is nice.
Trust me.
