$11 an hour is $22,880 a year.
You wanna live off that?
Oh yeah “get a real job”

You’re right on the line so it can go either way. Millennials are like 24-36 or so. 26-33 is probably prime millennials.

Can’t really help it when employers try to limit OT. You can work multiple jobs, but that’s not sustainable without a means to an end.
Or just be better at your job and go to a high end place. Some of those make 6 figures with a ton of experience.

This board does it.
Millennials are just the catch all term for people who don’t know what they’re talking about.

What a terrible way to look at it.
Well, that is the reality of it. Waiters and waitresses mostly make poverty level wages as it is. People who don't tip are forcing others to subsidize them involuntarily and they are doing it intentionally. I call that stealing.

I need to gain a few pounds. I lost 10-12 lbs when I had the flu last month and have only been able to gain back about 5 so far. Gotta get back in the gym and get the other 5-10 back.

So, is the waiter stealing from them if they are the reason the other customer didn't leave a tip?

Yeah, and? It’s an unskilled labor job that requires minimal training. Not to mention that the $11/hr figure came based off of no additional tips for the 6 hours of non-lunch rush.

Nope. Which is why I don’t work a minimum wage job.

I’ve never said that.

Be sure to tip the pre-tax amount.
I'm pretty good about tipping. After working in the food service industry, I always tip 20% on food purchases. Booze, different story. Not leaving a 20% tip for opening a beer.

I'm one of those people that has been an overtipper my entire life. That's not to say that I'm amazing or SOOOO generous. I have a soft spot for hardworking people, and I'm a total pussy about hurting anyone's feelings if they're nice to me, even if the service is less than stellar. I'm also one of those people that tip people who I probably shouldn't, and they ALWAYS get me with tip jars.
Even I'm starting to get fed up with the tipping scene in this country. Tip jars at Starbucks, tip jars at fast food drive-through windows, tip jars at cleaners... Seriously, WTF?
And the percentage at restaurants is going up and up. I've been tipping 20-25% for years, with 20% as the absolute floor. Bad service, 20% tip... Outstanding service, regular waitress that goes the extra mile, or someone that looks like they're struggling, sometimes even higher than 25%. But I feel like there will be a time when I'm completely average. How high will it go? Thirty percent? Forty percent? I learned recently that I'm already below-average when it comes to take-out. I've been doing 10% or $5, whichever is greater. Someone in the industry told me recently I should be closer to 15%.

I love how people think they're entitled to a certain lifestyle because they have a full time job. They act like working > 40 hours a week is crazy when in reality, it's not that much.
Posted on 6/18/18 at 12:02 pm to GreatLakesTiger24
I haven't been able to read the entire thread yet, but as someone who works in the service industry, I wanted to chime in.
I am a (full-time) supervisor at a brewery, which means that I bartend, actively, while also keeping an eye on the others who bartend and putting out whatever fires may pop up.
I worked in health care for 3 years...a "real" job...40 hours a week. You know what? Sitting at a desk for 40 hours a week was miserable for me. You know what isn't miserable for me? Slinging beers for 40 hours a week.
I like people and I like to engage in conversation so it works for me. The work is physical. I still have to count money and move kegs and attend meetings and fill out spreadsheets. I make less base hourly pay but working for tips motivates me to bring my absolute best attitude and hustle to work every single day. I work my arse off. I am generally rewarded.
It's almost like it's a real job.
I don't think I'm the entitled one.
