Who are the cheapskates? The restaurant owners? You think they give a frick either way? No matter which way it goes, the customer is paying.

I prefer to be able to reward good service, and punish bad service.

Even shitty service for me still get a good tip, especially if I feel like management set them up for failure (e.g: too may tables for one person). But I'll usually write something on the ticket.

Eh, I mean if the assumption in today's standard is 20%, they are really working for over 20%. I get your point, but I don't think it would actually change that much. Shitty service has much more to do with the management, culture, and quality of employee than it does the tip. Yes it helps, but the base level of service that is expected by most patrons is not high. It isn't "normally" hard to meet.

Shouldn't be eating out. Bologna sandwiches at home would help curtail that debt a little faster I'd think.

Then they don't need to be eating out. Or need to be eating at McDonald's.

I tipped about 10% a couple weeks ago. Too many tables, eh, you can still come by the table and say something. This guy had us waiting for 20 minutes and we had to get a hostess to take our drink order. Then he never refilled waters, never came by to check, never really did anything to show he was a good server.

Food was good, but I’ll probably never go back there just because the service was horrendous. 2 hours for a 30-45 minute meal.

They probably know you are a cheapskate, make up for your shortfall and talk about you behind your back.

I had something similar happen recently. Server showed up initially to take our drink orders, but another girl brought them out. Which is fine...it happens. Then he shows up for our meal orders. Again, same girl brings out the meals when they're ready. She also was the only one that refilled our drinks. I thought initially she was a trainee, but wasn't the case. She had her own tables. Needless to say she got the tip, not the original server. It was just bizarre.

I hate not tipping well, but sometimes it’s deserved. My wife waited tables in high school and paid her way through college waiting and bartending so I usually default to her opinion. I gave him a little more than what she said to give.

I'll go to $0 if I get annoyed enough. Those guys can go frick themselves, and if they have a problem with their $0 tip, we can have a conversation about it in front of the entire restaurant.

That's only happened a few times in my life though, so I have no problem with it. I'm not paying anyone for me doing all of the work

I hate when stuff like this happens. If the waiter is slammed, just tell me. Let me know that you're overcrowded or whatever. I'll know how to proceed to make things easier on you as well. Just leaving the customer in the dark is just a failure.

Yeah communication is key. Especially when the 2 waiters that had tables in the same area were far more visible than ours was.

20% is standard now? I always tip but I think it's retarded. Just pay your employees a living wage so I don't have to be responsible for doing it. People pretend like service will get worse if tips didn't exist but that's not true. Tipping like we do here isn't normal for the rest of the world.

A waiter or waitress has to really piss me off to tip them less than 15%. I find that the basics of serving are slowly but surely going by the wayside:

1. Approach a table and introduce yourself and get drinks within the first five minutes of them being seated.
2. Make sure you keep the drinks filled while eating, no matter what.
3. Bring salads out and space it out to where the people actually have time to eat the salad as opposed to putting the salad in front of them and then 2 minutes later, the entree comes out.

I actually had to explain to a waiter once that salad doesn't come out with the entree. He didn't get this, which shocked the shite out of me.

Even then, it's hard for me to screw over the waiter. They have to willfully neglect my table while spending all their time on a neighboring table for me to screw them on tip. It sucks bad enough to wait tables. But sometimes, that's the only option a person has at work for the time being. I get that.

I'll give you some insight. Restaurant managers/owners are simply telling the staff to help each other out, and sometimes there is a tip share option. But mostly it's just a "what goes around comes around" deal. Everyone helps each other, everyone wins.

I'd rather someone else bring my food out than it just sit in the back. I'm not there for the relationship with the server.

the standard 20 percent suggestion for tips at restaurants

WTF is this shite?

While I generally tip 18-20%, the "rule" has always been 15% for acceptable/expected service with 20% or high fore outstanding/exemplary service.

I am in my late 40s and con only think of one instance where I did not leave a tip. Even when the service is abhorrent, if there's any possible non-server explanation for any of it, I will leave something (but way less than 15%).

I had a 20 person family of gypsies one time. That was an eye opener.
