It’s about a wife and mother who feels unfulfilled and passionless in her life as a housewife. Her family leaves for a week, and she has an affair with a photographer while they’re gone. Many people - women especially - praised the main character for finally experiencing something real, something passionate for herself that wasn’t tethered to the responsibilities of children or her husband. She was celebrated for it.
I also remember studying a short story in grad school where a mom had an affair, cheating on her long time husband and eventually leaving her husband and children. No one in the class even cared to discuss the moral issues of her leaving her family. Once the exposition established that she was neglected emotionally, she suddenly had every right to pursue something that excited her.
I’m not saying the dude on the plane is a saint or should be exonerated. I’m just saying women need to shut the frick up.
