I’m aware of the implications.

And yes, we are black, catholic, Italians.

But what is the scam? Just fake gold with a stamp on the clasp that is not true?

Tell him to buy it with his own money. If he isn't old enough to make his own money then he's young enough for you to say hell no.

Mall kiosks are shady af. Get a tattoo and know it's legit.

I believe they’re gold plated, and the gold eventually starts flaking off.

LOL, it just means it was dipped in gold, so the outer layer is gold. Wears off eventually. Definitely do not waste $$ on actual gold.

Doesn't the "U" have a turnover chain that they really don't need?

Probably 14K gold plate. As someone mentioned it will likely leave a green ring around his neck after a few weeks/months.

80's and especially 90's style is back in. That means chains (not just gold) are back.

The middle of the mall jewelry store is basically like shopping at the Grand Bazar in Tehran. It's pretty much all Persians selling that stuff. The authenticity is probably somewhat questionable. But I bet you can haggle with them for anything.

Strip mall places that tout ‘watch repair’ are better.

My question is, what's up with the middle of the mall jewelry? The clasp actually says 14K or whatever. Is that just the clasp and not the actual chain?

Not really sure, but I do have some anecdotal evidence regarding my genius brother in law.

He went to one of these middle eastern dudes running a kiosk in our local mall and came across a deal. He figured the price of gold per ounce that a local pawn shop was buying for and came to the conclusion that the kiosk guy was selling his gold chains for less than market price for scrap gold. And he was gonna make a buck off of kiosk guy's mistake...

So he bought himself a big ol herring bone 12k gold chain and immediately took it across town to the pawn shop. They run their little test where they scrape it on some sandpaper and put a chemical reagent on it...and what do ya know? There's gold in it, but it ain't solid gold.

I asked him a couple weeks later what ever happened with that and he told me that he found out it wasn't real gold. He was feeling like he got over on the guy because he only bought one big arse chain instead of a bunch of shite he had originally planned to buy. He said he only bought the one "just to make sure".

Your brother in law and I think alike.

I was like hold it, how can you sell gold below market value?

Answer: You don't.

made him wear a dog tag chain for a while to prove he can keep up with it. So far so good.

Well, before I buy him a real gold chain, I thought I would grab a middle of the mall "gold" chain just to let the test phase continue to run it's course.
