Middle of the mall jewelry

My son wants a gold chain necklace. I don't know why, but that is what he wants. I made him wear a dog tag chain for a while to prove he can keep up with it. So far so good.
Well, before I buy him a real gold chain, I thought I would grab a middle of the mall "gold" chain just to let the test phase continue to run it's course.
My question is, what's up with the middle of the mall jewelry? The clasp actually says 14K or whatever. Is that just the clasp and not the actual chain?
I've never actually dealt with these middle of the mall guys before, so I'm just trying to get some info on the scam.

My son went through a gold chain phase when he was 14. He ordered a cheap one off Amazon. He wore it for about 3 months and we never saw it again. Never asked him what happened to it since he bought it with his money. This was also the phase he started wearing cologne. That also only lasted a few months.
