Anyone have experience with them?

My family has a property part of which had been occupied by both sides military during the Civil War. I'd like to search it. (I'm not looking to use on a beach or under water.)

Perusing Amazon, the prices range wildly from $100 - >$10000. Any advice?

As usual, thanks in advance.

We’ve had threads about this in the past so you’ll get lots of suggestions. A good all around brand is Garrett. It’s not a hardcore relic hunter’s brand but it will do a good job and is sophisticated enough to be a good coin hunter on the beach and shallow water. Someone will give a specific model…something in the AT line costing about $250 on Amazon maybe?

You are very lucky to live in an area where people have been dropping metal objects for centuries.

This guy is pretty spot on. I used a bounty Hunter from hobby lobby for years and it worked well. My lady got me a Garrett A/T pro and I could not be happier .

I once had to walk an extra half mile back to the car because of the one at the VA hospital in Birmingham. All over a little old fricking keychain knife about a half inch long. It had sentimental value, or I would have thrown it in the trash.

You’ll get what you pay for.

Middle of the road would be your best bet.

Garrett AT Pro. Try to get bundle that includes pin pointer. You need a pin pointer. I have AT pro and it’s very good. Probably run you around $700.

Unrelated oweoesque story...

LA state capital. Walk in, realize I have a knife on my keys and remember I'm wearing boots, which means a boot knife.

Throw keys in bin and set wallet on top.

Metal detector goes nuts when I walk through. Point to non steel toe boots, told good to go

Go get a shoe shine while I'm here. Realize it's actually an ankle holster right when the old black fellow slid the pants leg above the boot.

Ol baw slid the cuff back over the top and gave me a nod. I've tipped him very well every single time ever since. He could have put me in a whole world of trouble

Nokta simplex

Cut my teeth on Tesoro beep and digs, still have an Eldorsdo Umax. tried a Garrett at pro. Couldn’t find a mode I liked. Bought the simplex off of amazon and really impressed with the flexibility. You can have it set for a beginner mode all the way up to advanced with full notch control. Price is incredible to boot.

Agree with others on garret pinpointer. Tried a clone and it wound up being a paperweight.

get bundle

Forgot to add - get some decent over the ear headphones for sure. You’ll be amazed how soon you’ll be able to tell nuances in the tones. They block out background noise and discourage people from coming up to talk to you. One caveat is to be aware of what’s behind you if you’re anywhere near a sketchy neighborhood.

Pro Tip: If a woman ever approaches you and asks you what’s the best thing you’ve ever found, tell her “bored housewives.” You’re welcome.

Get a Garret to start with. I have an AT Pro. Works really well. I’ve found bullets and shell fragments in Port Hudson area.

Theres a group of guys that have found tons of civil war items. They meet every couple months.
If some of the BTR folks want to attend, let me know, I’ll get a date, time and location.

I've got the 11"DD coil and it's pretty accurate. I haven't done a lot of deep recoveries yet. It's very stable in trashy ground and has a very fast reset.(sounds off on very close objects) Don't be fooled by the price on the Simplex. It's a heck of a detector. I got the kit with the wireless earphones but I haven't been impressed with them.

I have a Whites MXT Pro that I bought specifically for civil war relic hunting and have found lots of stuff with it. It was around $900 in 2013 but it was worth every penny. Very powerful and useful. Like others have said, get a pinpointer also. I use a Garrets one and it saves a ton of time.
