Out because of this.
Honest question what is the beef with RA? I don't follow any of the politics of cobblers but he has taught me almost as much about shoe construction and recrafting as Trenton & Heath have. I find it very interesting to see shoes cut open and discussed. I am sure he has his biases and has trashed some shoes with big followings but I am curious if there is more to it than that.

I have the Moab (2 IIRC) low rise hiking "shoes". Mainly because so few hiking boots come in wide widths. They're great for what they are and I would consider the mid height boots if I needed them.
I think you have to make the call on going waterproof or not. I did with the shoes. I got the Merrell proprietary waterproofing which has been fine. For higher demand, I would likely spend the extra for Gore-Tex, but in either case waterproofing comes at the expense of retained heat/ sweat.
Hope this helps.

Lowa Renegade in goretex and without. Good boots
Asolo Fugitive GTX
If you're not wanting that much boot, then Keen is very comfortable.

I prefer Timberland to Merrill.
For actual hiking/backpacking/trekking I prefer Asolo. I have worn them for over 25 years. My current favorite is the TPS 520 and they look better in casual settings than any of the Cordura based boots. They are however in a different price range than the Moab 3. They do have a limited life though as all glue on soles do.

The low Moab is what I pretty much wear every day, 7 days a week. I've had the same shoe for the last 15 years. Keep a pair of business shoes at office for client meetings.
1. Got elastic shoelaces so they slip on.
2. Got wool shearling inserts so they are extra comfortable.
Wife and kids make fun of me because when I replace, I buy the same style and color every time. Probably on pair #8.
They old ones are camp/paint/fishing/mud shoes and since they are all the same. I keep the shoe in the best shape, throw away the trashed one.

While I won't wear them to work I am on the waitlist for a pair of Jim Green African Ranger barefoot (zero drop) boots that are a collab with Rose Anvil.

Fill your bath tub up to your ankles and stand in it until the water soaks through the boot, wear them until they’re dry. They will be broke in.

It’s either the Himalayan Walking shoe or nothing at all for me and my family.
