Between the mass shooting, spike in suicides and people doing crazy shite like going crazy because they didn't get enough meat on their sandwich, there is clearly something causes people to act irrational.

I think most of it are kids whose mother was an addict while pregnant. That has to play some type of factor in the development of a fetus.

Of course, there are a lot of veterans who come back with PTSD and other mental issues. I saw on 60 mins this past weekend about how they are finding CTE in veterans who were near explosions (multiple). It has the same effect as football players who has suffered multiple head injuries.

Is there anything else that can be contributed to mental illness?

Social media without a doubt.

The biggest difference now and then is this.

For a couple reasons

Bullying over social media happens a lot these days, kids are assholes. You can get bullied a lot outside of school/at home too but just by different means.

A lot of the tragedies covered non stop on social media and media in general inspire people. I mean look at some of these shootings in some of their motivations and fascinations with previous tragedies.

Immediate access to the internet and specific information online does not help as well.

I do think video games and other things steer kids/people into anti social circles and that does not do well for their mental development IMO

Never mistake the rate at which people are doing crazy shite, for the rate at which it is transmitted.

People have always been batshit. Always will be. Now, though, no batshit moment goes uncovered, generally.

If being an attention whore means that you have a mental illness then we might have a mental health issue here in America, otherwise, mental illness is just an over-prescribed money grab.

Its the immediate access that people have to damn near anything now that is driving people insane

Yeah, I know this is part of it, but if I had to guess, I would say there are more "mentally ill" people per capita than before.

I don’t know if every condition is but a lot of it is genetic such as schizophrenia and bipolar/manic depressive disorder

once again you could not be more wrong

the stigma around mental illness is not as prevalent as it once was. So we hear of more mental illness being reported medically and criminally and publically

Drug companies see a potential for profit, with that acceptance drugs are overprescribed leading to even more erratic behavior

mis/over medication is then misidentified as mental illness

media is instantaneous meaning we here more stories that before

You really are stupid

I have bipolar 2 disorder. My mother doesn't drink or smoke. I guess I don't fit your narrative.
