Depends, both parents don’t stick around in all species. Some species like sea turtles bury their eggs and leave. Humans only need the female to stick around. You can spread your seed faster that way. We don’t have natural predators.

I’ve thought about this a good bit recently.

Kids are still #1 but, you’re right, there should be some balance on the marriage side. It’s easy to lose sight of this.

Which is exactly the way it should be, if you're a good father. Unfortunately, there are a bunch of terrible fathers out there who are selfish as frick and it's all about them and them only.

You say that like there’s something wrong with it. That’s life. Men make the money. Women whore themselves out for it.

Marriage is the same way. Would your current wife marry a homeless person? Nope. They want to maintain or enhance the lifestyle they’re accustomed to. Like I said, there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s just life

Man, some of y'all married the wrong women. My wife makes more than I do. When we met I was making half of what I do now.

She definitely didn't marry me for money

My wife made more than me when we met. I make a decent amount more than her now but she changed careers for a less stressful job after my daughter was born.

No. This is who you marry when you’re looking at superficial attributes. Find someone who genuinely kind and generous with their time and attention. So many people marry out of lust and lust just does not stand the test of time or life’s disappointments.

There are plenty women out there who will love you for nothing but for just wow kind you treat them and knowing that you’ll be a good father to her children.

Yep. That will only keep a relationship going for a short time.

Wow. My parents split when I was a kid, but dad had us every weekend, was never more than an hour away, and there was never a hint of any other woman until we were in HS. He wasn’t always the nicest, but he always tried and has always been reliable and we never questioned his love for us.

Reading yalls stories makes me view what he did in a better perspective.

Now, I realize people do change and sometimes they grow apart but I for the life of me can’t imagine someone abandoning their children and never having contact with them again. I can tolerate a lot for someone I love (children) unconditionally.

I couldnt disagree more with this mindset. This is the kind of mindset that leads to divorce, and issues. Also, doesnt give your kids a good example of what a good forever relationship should look like. It sounds selfish as it's "your legacy" not the combo of "you and your wife's" legacy. Should have married someone else.

My father made sure we kids knew my mother was his #1 priority. And vice versa. Great father, but not "my friend." I watched them fight, I heard them laugh, and even them saw them "flirt" with each other like high schoolers.

My dad wouldnt hesitate to lift his hand in anger/punishment at us, but I NEVER saw his hand even flinch in that manner with my mother.

As a teen I asked him why I had to ask mom, because I knew he made the final decision. He said "son, when you leave, I'm still here with her." Thats long term thinking.

I'm proud to be my fathers son for being a great husband to my mother, and then father. Thats the legacy he left.

This is the mindset that leads to divorce when you’re in your 40’s and 50’s. You have to still have something to talk about when the kids leave.

I wasn't very close to my mom after my parents split but it wasn't from her lack of trying. I just didn't put much effort into it.

She's pretty close to my wife and I probably see her more now than I ever have. My dad is my best friend.

I don’t know the circumstances of your parents divorce but at least she can say she tried to stay in your life. I actually feel for her. Children can hold their parent in such high regard that they forget that they’re human. They make mistakes and most have to capacity to feel guilty about it and try to make amends. I hope she’s plays a role in your daughters life.

My parent have been married 40 years so I had no idea what it was like growing up in a broken home. My wife’s parents divorced when she was 7 and it still sucks for her 30 years later, we just discussed whether we’d attend her moms or dads Christmas because we don’t have time to do both.

I’d never do that to my kids

I held a grudge against her when I was younger and immature. She was the reason that my parents divorced but looking back on it neither of them were happy. They were absolute polar opposites.

My wife struggles with this with my family. My parents don't particularly care to be around each other.

Mom remarried eventually. Dad never did. He told me when they got divorced that he'd never marry again. That was 30 years ago and he never did.
