you know that phrase has been around for a long time, and wasn't invented by reddit, right?

I’ll always remember when my grandfather died and his service with full military honors from having served in WW2 and the guy from the military honors unit presented her with the flag, on bended knee, the last thing he said was, “we thank you for your sacrifice”.
So Memorial Day weekend I’ve always made it a point to thank those people for their sacrifice of those I know whose loved ones served in the military, and are no longer with us.

Sounds like a case of stolen butthurt.

As a veteran, I just ignore people like that. Happy Memorial Day!

I'm a veteran and I'll tell you what I've come to realize.
I am a huge history buff and got the opportunity to go to the invasion beaches in France. You know what I saw there? Folks laying on the beach enjoying themselves. Honestly at first I was a bit appalled. Just imagine, folks were sunbathing on "our" Omaha beach. After a while I came to realize that the folks that landed on that beach would probably really appreciate that simple act. They were part of the reason that the people in that area were allowed that simple pleasure even today.
I think the all of the veterans that are memorialized on that special day would appreciate it being one of both remembrance and joy. They might say something like "Have a barbeque, drink a beer and say a toast to me with a smile on your face. I paid the price so that you may do those things.
Happy Memorial Day!

Your buddy sounds like the worst type of veteran.

We celebrate a lot of things weirdly...kids collect eggs to celebrate the death of Christ.
So..you know..it is what it is

quote:Good solid reminder would be a post on Memorial Day itself asking people to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and maybe take a minute to make a toast to the fallen while they're enjoying their BBQ or beach trip.
Is this a good solid reminder to keep things in perspective, or douche to the extreme?
Making a buzzkill post 4 days before the actual holiday is just being a douche

military vets who post that shite sure didnt give a frick about remembering the dead when they were younger pounding drinks and arse and treating it like a day off
very hypocritical imo

Any former military worth their weight doesn’t give a shite how you treat Memorial Day.

Actually telling a veteran happy Memorial Day is what’s incorrect but no one should get butthurt over it.
As a vet myself, I agree with this. I dont get bent out of shape over it at all. I post a pic and simply ask people to remember what we are celebrating. Could care less how you celebrate it ..

There are a number of issues on which I can't reach a definitive personal opinion. This is one of them.
I think I have a good solution, though, for every Vet who can't feel as happy as civilian never-Vets on Memorial Day -- find a local Vets organization such as VFW, DAV and American Legion. These Vet orgs will be attending NUMEROUS Memorial Day events that will feature Taps and wreath-laying. Get with one of these Vet orgs and attend a couple of these events. Salute the flag, honor and remember the fallen at the event.
Then go celebrate with joy at some picnic along with safe and prosperous civilians that never have and never will never know the pain and challenges of war.
