I've got a buddy (who is former military) who has done his yearly routine of trying to kill everyone's buzz by issuing a reminder about the upcoming holiday. I'm certain he won't be the last I see either. Recent status was somethign along the lines of "Please don't say happy memorial day. This is a somber day to remember those we've lost and their sacrifice. Let's remember our vets who died and their families. This is not a day for well wishes".

What are your thoughts on this? On one hand I GET the sentiment, I fully do. On the other, this day (like EVERY OTHER government holiday) is seen to Joe Everyman as a free day off work to have fun and live it up a little.

Is this a good solid reminder to keep things in perspective, or douche to the extreme?

I'll be in the USVI and drunk. I'll pour one out to our fallen heroes.

I’ll be sure to tell him HMD if I see him at the Prop Stop this weekend.

I clearly understand it is a day off and I appreciate that but I also don't view it as say a 4th of July celebration. I saw some local car dealerships capitalizing off it the other day which I find trashy.

I have a military buddy who said people would tell him happy Memorial Day which is incorrect. That’s for Veterans Day. I guess it’s no big deal if you simply just say happy Memorial Day as a blanket statement though.

I think you honor the dead, by enjoying life. Those men and women did not die so we can be sad and mope around. They did it so we can be free and happy.

Honor them by enjoying what they gave you.

They are in heaven now and living a better life than ours.

People these days try so hard to find something to be offended about. Get the frick over it. If you served in the military...it is to preserve freedom. That freedom includes celebrating a fricking holiday as you wish.

Well he is technically right.

Memorial Day is in remembrance of the dead, and Veterans Day is for thanking veterans. Still, never hurts to thank people for their service on at least two days of the year.

I am guilty of this being former military. I’ve become very close over the years with the families of Marines that I’ve lost to combat and suicide. I do it for them. I’ve had many conversations specifically about this subject. To a T they all say it feels like people forget about their son’s or brother’s death in service to this country. It’s one day of the year specifically dedicated to the dead, not the willing. When I post my annual piece every Memoria Day, it is not to change anyone’s mind or behavior, it is for these families to see that there are people that support them and remember their loved ones. I understand the complaints, but it’s not always a look at me move.

I've got a buddy who was a Ranger...just saw him post "Happy Memorial Day weekend" on his facebook page. Guess somebody needs to tell him that he needs to be more somber about actually surviving through his years of service. Surely a SJW will step in and put him in his place.

This was my point as I think everyone thinks this is fine. Actually telling a veteran happy Memorial Day is what’s incorrect but no one should get butthurt over it.
