They always seemed so proud to show off their "discovery" of taping shows off tv to record on 8-hour videocassette tapes. Some even dot-matrixed catalogs of their library offerings for guest ease of selecting (i.e. showing off), amassing a hundred titles. They never considered the obsolescence of their li'l VHS library.

Poor bastards.

Betamax was the better format but the porn industry chose VHS

Sources say that VHS won over Betamax due to the greater availability of pornographic movies on the format. In the 1980s the founder of Vivid Entertainment said "we pushed VHS harder, and in that sense we did have something to do with VHS winning out"

My dad notoriously picked early tech losers. We had both formats including laser disc but his porn collection was betamax only.

He also did record a Ron Jeremy flick on the camcorder which I discovered during class in 7th grade.

shite. The lady that watched us during the summers husband had one of these collections. Mostly taped off of HBO, three to a tape. And yep, kept them cataloged and numbered.

So many great 80's titties for a young lad with nothing to do all summer. Private School, Porky's, Harbodies, on and on. All kinds of dirty foreign shite off of Cinemax.

And so many other great movies I remember first watching from his collection (great for a 9 year old at least). Predator, Space Balls, Iron Eagle, Bachelor Party, Kickboxer, Beverly Hills Cop, Lethal Weapon, Karate Kid, the Burbs, Dragnet, Terminator.

I think you've forgotten how cool it used to be to own physical movies back then. Or have to make a drive to rent one.

Always thought betamax was cooler because the cassette was smaller than VHS back in the day.
