I agree. It ain't broke and don't need fixin.
It could be better, though. Assuming cell service stays up, an Uber type app would have done wonders for the rescue effort.

The FB page was getting hit so quickly, they couldn't keep their map updated. That would've been very nice to have so people could strategically move through areas

This. We were out in st amant yesterday. My buddy and I both had handheld VHF's. We ran into a few other boats and asked what channel everyone was communicating on. They looked at us with a shocked look on their face. Even one of the sheriff's deputies looked at us funny when we asked if they were using VHF's in the boats.

Radios would've helped a lot

I am sure a lot of younger people do not know what handheld radios are.

Officials could've gone and gotten a bunch from many stores around. There are probably a few hundred hanging out in stores around BR. I'm sure it'll be done if this happens again. Unfortunately something like this has to happen for you to be able to plan properly

That's different than all these " hey look at me" facebook videos.

95% of the guys I've know on FB seem to be out their for the right reasons...

Now there are one or two that are using the social media to give themselves a pat on the back though and not coordinate.

But hey even the attention whores are helping, whatever their motivations are

I am all for anyone that takes it upon themselves to help people in their boats and that's what makes our area great. But I think it would be beneficial in the future to have some optional training before hand and also have people have their names on a list to be called in case of future disasters. That way these baws in their boats can go where the help is needed most and it can be safer for all of them. Just an idea. I don't think it should be required, because we know how the government can turn simple ideas into s shite show,

All of this is an absolutely terrible idea. The civilian volunteers accounted for the vast vast vast majority of the rescues. Don't mess with it.

If we are going to do this we need more taxes. Lots and lots of new taxes.

Also, we will have to organize them. Anyone interested in helping needs to fill out these 42 page forms and mail them in with a check for $500.

Some things are better off left alone. It worked just fine so let's don't fix it.

Finny how these guys will risk personal equipment and pay out of pocket for gas but as soon as boats aren't needed they disappear. Or bitch about being told to stay out of the area. Still plenty of volunteer work needed and donations to be made. of course, that's not as cool as showing off you duck boat and certainly not as "heroic"

How do you know they disappeared? Are you somehow logging or tracking them and their movements? Ever think maybe they have family and friends that were affected by flooding too and they are helping clean out houses, getting things running, and sheltering people in their homes? Maybe they are there they just happen to be in their trucks now parked in the driveways they were floating by in previous days. Maybe they are now driving around their neighborhoods and other neighborhoods delivering water (saw this many times), food (saw this multiple times), or just asking to help move heavy objects (saw this several times). Maybe they are collecting donations from their own homes and accounts and putting money in also. Or maybe they don't have money to put in because they spent it on fuel, maintenance, and supplies for the previous days.

I followed the one guy, Damien, that kept up with updates and whatever on Facebook live.

Not one time did I ever think that guy was doing it for attention. Turns out, there are miserable people out there like some of you in this thread, that just can't stand the fact that he wasn't doing what he was doing the way THEY wanted him to do. Using social media to get the word out.

He posted this morning that he was stepping aside because people found out his past and was spreading false ideas about him etc etc. I genuinely believe he was just out there to help. But, again, people like some in this thread, just couldn't let that happen and ran the guy into the ground.
