I'm a fairly picky eater sometimes and you can make some amazing non-processed meals.

It's just tough to easily get the ingredients for most of the recipes because grocery stores don't have them.

High fructose corn syrup and seed oils.

In.
fricking.
Everything.

Real cane sugar is way better for you if you see that anywhere. Still not great, but way better than HFCS.

Seed oils is especially hard and so much science is coming out about how inflammatory they are. Just awful for you. Getting some traction, so I'm sure in 10 years there will be more options when the demand gets there, but for now, we're screwed.

Spend a week in Europe and eat the fresh food and it will make you never want to eat our processed foods again.

You don’t see many Sysco trucks making the rounds in Florence or Athens

One thing I'll add to the fascination with the health of Mediterranean folks is that they also have far lower levels of cortisol on average. They get more sun, take longer breaks from work, sleep more, spend more time with family, walk more, etc.

These things decrease cortisol and increase oxytocin. This keeps off gut fat, lowers cancer rates, and is great for your heart health.

Americans just love their rat race in addition to their processed foods and sugar.

Seed oils were really demonized over the last 10 years. More recently, I feel like they're being rehabilitated.

Omega 6's are necessary for human life. If you balance them with 9's and 3's, they are considered a healthy fat.

That "inflammation" narrative is not reality.

It just sucks when my wife and I want to do 3-4 days a week of no processed food and it's fricking difficult at normal grocers if you want any sort of variety.

This is a case of being part of the system. Your choices are limited because the system caters to the majority.

Well, define "balance." We should eat the amount of Omega 6s that are in line with our natural, ancestral diet.

The amount of seed oils Americans eat on average would require eating roughly 100 ears of corn a day. Is that your idea of "balance"?

For reference, studies of very healthy indigenous populations still eating an ancestral diet, their adipose was composed of something like 3% of linoleic acid IIRC.

Go back to your Monsanto bosses and get a new playbook.

Mediterranean Diet
There's not really any such thing. There's 22 countries bordering the Sea - with massively differing cultures and cuisines.

This concept was invented in the late 80s and early 90s by the food industry itself.

However, it's a clear no-brainer (pun intended) that not eating frankenfood is good for you.

The Mediterranean diet utilizes good fats with lots of veggies and seafood.

I like smoked meats too much to go full Med diet but we make it a point to eat leaner with lots of veggies throughout the week.
Smoked meats don't usually have "bad fats".

There's a massive variety of whole foods that are decadent and you can enjoy yourself on. Stop being convinced that enjoying yourself means you necessarily must ingest poison.

False. You should keep in mind that "real cane sugar" is highly processed as well.

This is by far the hardest part to allow for when eating out. They put this fricking shite in EVERYTHING.
