TL;DR - quit eating like a fatass if you want to feel better.

Switching to a diet full of fresh veggies and low in processed foods could do wonders for your brain's biological age, new research shows.
According to the international team of researchers who ran the study, eating a Mediterranean diet rich in vegetables, seafood, and whole grains appears to slow the signs of accelerated brain aging typically seen in obesity with as little as 1 percent loss in body weight.
Brain scans taken after 18 months showed the participants' brain age appearing almost 9 months younger than expected, compared to estimates of their brain's chronological age.

Like the participants in the clinical trial, you might not feel as old as the years you've lived, or perhaps your body feels like it's aging faster than you are – this is the difference between biological and chronological age.
Either way, research shows your body's biological age is much more than a feeling: Signs of biological aging can be found dotted along your DNA, etched onto the ends of your chromosomes, or as this study suggests, in the loosening connections of your brain.
While a growing body of research suggests that biological aging brought on by stressful events could be reversible, this new study shows that improving your diet may be one of the simplest options to improving body condition, irrespective of the years.
quote:
In the study, the researchers imaged the brains of 102 participants who were taking part in a larger clinical trial conducted at one workplace in Israel. Brain scans were taken once before the trial began and again after 18 months, along with a battery of tests of liver function, cholesterol levels, and body weight.
Groups ate one of three diets: a Mediterranean diet with lots of nuts, fish, and chicken instead of red meat; a Mediterranean diet with a few added extras such as green tea for the polyphenols; or a diet based on healthy dietary guidelines.
Estimates of brain age were based on an algorithm that had been trained on brain scans from a separate cohort of nearly 300 people, with the model accurately predicting age from measures of brain connectivity.
On average, people in the trial lost around 2.3 kilograms. For every 1 percent of body weight lost, the participants' brains appeared almost 9 months younger than their chronological age, the researchers found.

Sugar/processed foods/vegetable oils -> inflammation -> aging -> death

I can drink wine with this, right?

I love Mediterranean food too.

weird how Science Alert attributes it directly to the "Mediterranean diet" but the actual study just attributes it to general weight loss

The common demoninator in all the healthy diets is avoiding processed foods.

The Mediterranean diet utilizes good fats with lots of veggies and seafood.
I like smoked meats too much to go full Med diet but we make it a point to eat leaner with lots of veggies throughout the week.

Greek food I find kind of boring. International wise I like the Asian cuisines and Indian/Pakistani food.

I think the Med Diet is the best, most logical, most sustainable "Diet" out there. I really don't consider it "dieting" in the conventional sense.
I'm just too lazy to stick to anything totally consistently, but I do try to incorporate Med aspects

So by eating healthy, when I'm 90 I'll have the brain of an 89-year-old? Sign me up.

My friend is doing this and she claims yes but with a meal only.
I'm on the Lion and will add a little wine eventually but veggies are a NO.
Sugar is the real devil.

Correct.
Plus, a big thing about Mediterraneans is they love some sunlight and red wine.

You should look into the brain mapping they're doing now days. It doesn't surprise me that they're able to track things like this now.
It's really interesting stuff. A bunch of good documentaries on it.
I'm highly interested in anything regarding the brain and how it functions. My grandma had dementia and my dad is starting to show the signs of it. That, combined with my past, has me worried as shite for the future of my memory.
Anyways, the research being done now on the brain is very interesting.

The entire food industry and especially the push for fake meat will fall apart without junk ingredients.

Can 100% agree, currently in the middle of a two-month trip to Italy with the wife (no pics). The food is amazing and I have never had a better feeling gut, no bloating or anything. Just an example, but their Fanta is literally actual OJ, actual sugar (no corn syrup) and sparkling water.

True but don’t you think grocery stores have to cater to the taste of their customers? Just like if McDonald’s can make money selling celery juice, it would.
Regardless, of what research comes out about what is made healthy or unhealthy, people will eat what makes them happy at the moment. They are willing to sacrifice long term benefits at the expense of short term happiness.

Oh I agree, Americans are dumb, fat, and impulsive.
It just sucks when my wife and I want to do 3-4 days a week of no processed food and it's fricking difficult at normal grocers if you want any sort of variety.
We end up eating meat, steamed vegetables, sweet potatoes, and expensive unprocessed cheese from an organic dairy (expensive as frick) for dinner every night and the monotony is brutal.

Agreed
Evolution wise, the higher fat from meat allowed our brains to grow
Of course that wasn’t trans fat or seed oils that are packaged in all mass produced food.
