SAN DIEGO -- The smallest surviving baby in the world was released this month from a San Diego hospital after being born at just 8.6 ounces, officials at Sharp Mary Birch said.

The baby, named Saybie, was born at 23 weeks, three days in December. When she was released from the hospital this month, she weighed 5.6 pounds.

Sharp Mary Birch announced the baby's birth at a news conference held Wednesday.

Her status as the world's smallest surviving newborn comes via the Tiniest Babies Registry, which is maintained by University of Iowa. She weighed 7 grams less than the previous smallest baby, who was born in Germany in 2015, according to Sharp.

Wow! That’s half the size of a typical 23 week baby. Absolutely amazing. What a roller coaster for the parents.

Incredible. Does it say how big she was when released from hospital? Curious how rapid the growth was. Newborns' resiliency is pretty amazing

Ha let's throw OP's political request completely out the window. If the parents wanted to raise the baby then the outcome would be same. If abortion is made legal it will not result in willing parents having to kill babies.

Probably averaging more than $10,000 a day in the ICU, for over 150 days, and numerous health problems and cognitive deficiency for the rest of her life, a really huge victory.

This is incredible and fantastic!

Family member was born at 27 weeks and weighed 1 lb, 12 oz. Gosh, he was small, so I can't imagine this child. Our guy is an active thriving 3 year old with no issues related to his early birth. I'm still amazed.

I fixed a 10 oz hamburger steak for dinner last night.

I was still hungry after eating though.

Dangerously close to implying you are for eugenics there....

You obviously don't grasp what eugenics is.

I'm looking at a cost benefit analysis for saving these extremely low weight babies that are often the result of drug addicted mothers or other prenatal adversity, and who if they survive will be most often mentally and physically impaired for the rest of their lives.
