Just to clarify, OP:

You knew how to change belts on your car, but not brakes?

Ive never had to change brakes on a car before. I’ve only owned a car for 3 years.

I called a few places to get the water pump and oil changed in my lower unit on my boat. Got prices from $150-$240.

I watched a couple you tube videos and did the work my self for $60 in parts, took me 30 minutes. A1 Auto makes some good you tube videos on common vehicle repairs. For boat engine I watc That Boat Guy, he makes bank reselling boat motors that need very simple repairs.

Most car dealerships and auto shops have these people in a position called a Service Writer. They are the main liason between the car owner and shop foreman/mechanic.

Their job is to up-sell you on other products/services like shocks, struts, brakes, rotor, transmission flushes, oil and transmission changes, or any other service they may offer.

If they don't meet certain quotas or up-sell enough they get let go.

Harder to find a honest mechanic than a honest woman.

After doing mine I can't believe people pay for that.

YouTube is amazing. I just installed a door in a wall with YouTube. Easy money.

Years ago I was on a road trip and caught a flat. Stopped at a Sears Auto Center to get the tire fixed .
They said they noticed when they swapped out the spare that I needed a brake job.
Made it sound like I probably wouldn’t make it home safe.
Vehicle had only 34K miles. Told them if I needed a brake job at 33K it was going back to the dealer.
They will rip you off if you don’t know better. It’s all about commission

I've been using Firestone for years. They are annoying with the upsells, "oh we also noticed....". You just have to say no to the follow up call they make.

However, their mechanics are the best imo. If you need something important fixed, Firestone is solid.

Yep. I usually do all of the simple task. Brakes, spark plugs, oil, etc. Wife's 14 year old car engine started lurching. Did all the basic stuff. Cleaner air flow valve, mass air sensor and cleaned all filters. Brought it to a mechanic shop. Just to see what was wrong with it. Wanted $600 to change out a hose and sensor underneath the manifold. They also told me that this might not fix problem. I declined the work, I'm not gonna pay half of what the cars worth to fix something that may or may not fix it. So basically I'm gonna buy my wife a new car.

And the kicker is.

They charged me $140 just to hook it up to the computer

I wouldn't let the Firestone or Goodyear places check the air in my tires, or do anything else. Their complete business model is to up sell.
forestone’s lifetime alignment is well worth it if you live in the Nola area. I have no problems saying no thanks to anything else they recommend

All of the ones I've used are honest. I've never had them come up with a needed fix that I didn't already suspect and I always noticed a significant improvement when I got the car back.

They're expensive but that's not the kind of service where you want to pinch pennies.

Cars rarely need rear brakes after 75k miles. I wouldn’t change brakes as preventive maintenance either. Change them when they start pulsing or making noise.

One time I got talked into changing just the back breaks.

Less than a year later the dealership tells me it’s a must that I change my brake pads. I figure they’re talking about the front since I didnt replace those yet.

Nope. The brand new back breaks were worn to trash and the original front brakes still looked fine.

You’re saying the new brakes you bought got worn down? Or that your dealership was trying to scam you.

Depends on the car. I've had cars where I never changed the brakes then I've had other cars where I've had to change them ever 40k miles

As a mechanic, the dishonesty in this industry really irritates me. Because when I actually do notice something that needs changing or fixing, the customer normally doesn't get it fixed probably thinking I'm trying to scam him. And yes most of us do work on commission, so there in lies the problem at most places. Find a place that pays by the hour instead.

Ever see the Midas brakes commercial on tv and think 200 bucks for brakes was a good deal? I did too until I changed them myself for the first time. With a good jack and an air gun changing brake pads takes maybe 20 minutes...you can go on rock auto and get good name brand front and rear pads for less than 40 bucks total.

And as long as you don’t let your pads go to shite and start grinding on the rotor, you shouldn’t really ever need to change them unless you slam on brakes everywhere you go.

Rotors are easier to change than brakes
