GONZALES — A nearly $104 million property tax exemption for a proposed $1.2 billion expansion of Shell Chemical's Geismar plant in Ascension Parish appears headed for approval this month.

quote:

On the same night a split School Board in neighboring East Baton Rouge Parish shot down $2.9 million in school tax exemptions for ExxonMobil after an extended public debate, the Ascension Parish Council gave its enthusiastic backing to a Shell exemption that dwarfs what ExxonMobil was seeking.

quote:

"I'll put it to you like that commercial, you know: 'We know you have choice of where you want to go.' We appreciate you selecting Ascension Parish. I know we're still competing, but we're going to extend the hand of friendship and welcome," Councilman John Cagnolatti told a Shell executive Thursday in Gonzales.

quote:

The 10-year exemption for Shell received the 11-member council's recommendation with an unopposed vote, one abstention, no public comment and only plaudits from council members.

This is because Ascension knows the value the plants bring to the parish... Baton Rouge has forgotten

The only thing about making the move to SLP from GZ is the school system. It's legit in Ascension.

AP knows the benefits of the tax exemptions. Getting these plant expansions will result in a big net positive for tax collection. Plus you’re bringing new high paying jobs into your area. The plants aren’t living tax free, they still represent a big tax boost over having nothing there otherwise

The brain dead, drooling, simpletons in the BR government would kill the golden goose for an egg.

You know what AP is in this context right?

What named GZ would be in AP

Using that logic, SLP can only mean one thing. I don't type it all out because then I get clowned

mostly because it seems like the infrastructure can't handle any more.

Mainly because residential development is never done in a smart way with things like flooding and traffic kept in mind.

I don't understand AP people.. They applaud when there are plant expansions and new restaurants because it will create growth, but then whine and bring out their pitch forks every time there is a new residential development

Maybe because only one car goes through in a light cycle trying to turn left, every intersection has no turning lane.
