I have heard it said that MDA is the best place in the world for rare conditions and cutting-edge treatments, but that it may not be the best place to treat more "common" cancers like prostate cancer and some breast cancers... and in fact MDA may not be as good for these conditions as smaller providers. I have no idea if this is accurate but curious if anyone agrees with this sentiment?

Well Houston is the most diverse city I believe. Whites are a minority in the city. Us outside of the City, in Harris County are mostly white.

Doesn’t Ochsner have an affiliation agreement with MD Anderson giving you launching pad of service to see if they can treat it locally and refer you to their main campus if necessary.

Yes. This partnership creates opportunities for virtual consults with MDA on Ochsner’s campus. Perhaps the most important piece is access to clinical trials. This partnership allows patients to access trials (new, advanced treatments not yet widely available) without having to travel to MDA.

Their surgeons are great for two reasons. One- because they are smart and dedicated to treating cancer. But as important- it’s all they do. They operate on cancer all day every day. There is a saying in cancer treatment. If you are choosing a surgeon, the one you want is the one who has done the most surgeries of your type. That experience is the most valuable thing you can have. It means they will be comfortable and confident operating on you.

Cancer treatment is a complicated animal. MDA is the best because they live it all day every day.

I’ve had family members say the same I can tell you Mary Bird Perkins in Hammond was so great to me. I had prostate cancer a couple years ago. With the insurance I had I still owed like 10k The nurse called me and told me that the doctor took care of it. She said that he does that for a lot of his patients. I’m forever grateful to Doctor Elson, incredible doctor

MD Anderson is an incredible place.

And the fact that they share the results of their research benefits everyone everywhere. It has earned its place.

That passes when you get there and meet the staff. They are all in the business of curing cancer. They don’t lead with treatment. Their goal is to remove it and prevent it from returning.

When my wife openly worried about it coming back, the oncologist told her “we don’t let it come back”.

The truth is curing cancer will not be a sudden event. It will be a process where different types of cancers will have different cures over time. Some may not be cured in our lifetime, but I sincerely believe some will. MD Anderson is also in the business of curing cancer and that business will expand once cures become their practice. There won’t be enough patients in the world to put MD Anderson out of business.

It's rare that a post on a message board touches my cynical heart.. that was good stuff .

And I think you're right- if they wind up being the world cutting-edge leaders in curing cancer- business will never stop booming for quite some time .

You’re right, it’s an incredible complex.

But after my wife’s fight with cancer, I hope to never see the place again.

Daughter was diagnosed with stage 4 renal cancer. By the time she got there, only experimental treatments were available other than the normal chemo and such. The treatments because of stage 4 were severe and she was on the fence a good bit. Nothing they could do, and sent her home and said she had maybe 3 months to live. She died two days later. Thank goodness because she was in some major pain. Love you Brooke.

I’ve heard that as well. Mom was there for her radiation induced osteosarcoma.

Yes it is.
Not only the physical hospital itself but everything associated with it. The way they communicate with the patient leading up to treatment, testing, etc. etc., assigning an 'advocate' to you for direct contact if you have any questions. Everyone I know that has used MDA for treatment say the same thing, amazing place and great doctors. The doctors I have met there also do cancer research.
Are you guys staying in the Rotary House?

My wife has a rare cancer and the number of trials available to her are limited. There are one or two opening up soon that the Dr thinks would benefit her. In the meantime he agreed with the Ochsner doctor as to plan B (plan A failed) which will be done in New Orleans. If she gets on one of the trials, she will have to go back and forth to Houston.
