Wasn’t that new proposed arena downtown supposed to be a big new hotel with a convention center and restaurants?

I think once Nick lost the election that plan was out the window. Seems like he wanted an amphitheater and hotel but the new mayor is against it.

As for this being put in north LC, no one is going to use it there and it will end up being a waste. Needs to be in the downtown area to be utilized but too many people crying about north LC not getting anything that it will probably end up going there.

$30 million sports complex

I don't care where they put it, as long it's not downtown. Reached out to my city council rep to let him know. First time I've done that

Why?

If the only two options are downtown or Goosport, then downtown is an infinitely better option

The hotel is still a go, but I think the amphitheater is dead, and they will just make improvements to the existing one

We should rename the state after a law firm.

Not associated with any of the Townsleys, but I was a McNeese booster for a couple years at the end of Viator's first run

I have to imagine there are better uses of that proper than an indoor sports arena. You don't even have that much space to do anything worth a shite.

If the NLC area isn't viable, there's plenty of land south and east to do it.

And turn it into a real Thunderdome

I think both proposed locations are horrible. A better option might be in the power center by the soccer and baseball fields to make it all one huge sports complex.

The Mayor will do everything in his power to make sure the complex isn’t built across the street from his home in North Lake Charles.

Do you think its best utilization is to be built in one of the highest crime areas of the city?

Fun fact Thomas Filo’s brother David was one of the founding members of Yahoo! Went to HS at Sam Houston in Moss Bluff.

No argument there. Both proposed locations are shite. I don't think it's gonna get nearly as much use downtown as they're letting on. How many cheer and gymnastics meets are realistically gonna come here? Can't those be hosted at the civic center or the legacy/townsley center?

I never said I agreed or disagreed with the location. I was just stating the facts on why the North LC location won’t win.

If we have a nice new hotel by the civic center and the sports complex across the street it is a possibility. The lakefront has always been underutilized and mismanaged, though.

Remember when the civic center used to actually host events? People forget that UFC 22 and UFC 24 were both there. UFC 22 between Frank Shamrock and Tito Ortiz is regarded as one of the best ever too.

Our downtown entertainment and utilization has been left behind for this entire century since those fights and since Rita destroyed Harrah's

New bridge, new lakefront developments and restaurants, new hotel, and those pay by the hour hotels being torn down due to the new bridge create a lot of opportunity.

I am not saying the sports areana being there is the best spot, as I said the power center by the soccer and baseball fields might be better, but I can see where it being downtown would be convenient for tourism and help make a real push towards a better lakefront.

I still say that old cemetery downtown is prime real estate and should be relocated.

Also, there is a lot more happening downtown again. I want to go check out the new golf sim they just opened in the old Blue Dog cafe.

so couple things here

1) the land in north LC is a no go unless the owner decides to sell it for the appraised price and originally agreed upon price. Right now he has doubled since the city didnt close on it originally and is refusing to come off the price, so that site is a no go anyways

2) the facility must be built in low or medium income housing

3) the ampatheatre idea was terrible by nick. We cant come close to using the one we have now.

4) people bitching about mcneese raising money by selling naming rights are stupid AF and have zero understanding of the finances of a college athletic program like McNeese. most people bitch just to bitch

as far as the indoor facility, I personally think it would be better near power center but I also understand why some dont want that. Downtown would be way better use and the facility is being modeled after 1 in texas that host regional and national level events in Basketball, cheer, gymanstics etc. to me the civic center could be remodeled to handle that. needs a new remodel anyways

but with all that said, I do think it would bring people in. like you stated its a chance for downtown to be completely changed with everything going on. Just cant waste the opportunity like normal.

but North LC would be terrible location for this.
