It's been explained to you that this same information likely comes out if it was properly investigated the first couple times around when the DAs refused to press charges. And no matter how big of a POS he is, he still has the right to expedited trial so they're just adhering to his 6th Amendment right.

Actually, we do need this today. We need this every day to be reminded that racism is still alive and well in this country. We need to be made uncomfortable to the point that we have to confront that fact and do what we can to squash it out.

I always believed (and probably still do) that this was a racial bias and vigilante crime that led to a killing (rather than a chase they intended/expected to end with a lynching).
But to the extent it matters for sentencing, I can't imagine people are going to care much about the nuances of that now.
