An 11th-grader at McKinley High was arrested Wednesday after he tried to flee rather than have his bookbag searched, a bag inside which authorities later found a loaded, stolen 9-mm handgun, said a spokeswoman for the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said the incident occurred at 8:42 a.m. when a sheriff's deputy working as a school resource officer confronted two students who showed up late for school. The officer then asked the high school's dean of students to check the bags of the late students, prompting the 11th-grader to flee. That student was soon caught and the handgun was found inside his bag.

Surprised he’s getting disciplined

How did they suspect him? Was he holding his book sack sideways?

The student, who is 16, is facing counts of illegal carrying of a firearm on a school property and illegal possession of a stolen firearm. Also under Louisiana's zero tolerance rules, McKinley High has to seek his expulsion, though the student can appeal

Wait, the principal cant expel someone? They have to ask?

They don’t want to screw up all those statistics which claim McKinley’s a great school.

Expulsion is a big deal. Leaving this up to one individual is dumb. I'm not against it having to be elevated to the school board or some higher authority than at the whim of each schools principles.

May be a big deal but there are some things which should be a no brainer. Like possession of an actual weapon on campus, not a fricking pop tart shaped like a gun.

I got expelled for two weeks my senior year for drinking at a football game. I had to go somewhere else and talk with people at the school board and they determined how long.

Got back to school and the school had posted notes all around about how you can get expelled for drinking at school related events. The next year a kid got flat out drunk and ran on to the football and didnt even get suspended. I thought that was worse than me grinding/pretending to slap the butt of the assistant principle.

True. You could nickname your wiener "the prosecutor".
