France is dumb.

"Hey we'll let them into the country and let them self-radicalize in Muslim enclaves for a decade before making them angry by banning their religious garb."

Too little too late.

For this reason, I feel this law is rather dumb. Is there a law making it illegal for a muslim to tell a French woman to put on more clothes? If not, there should be.

The public reaction should be explosive.

In all honesty, you can kinda see the logic behind it from France's point of view. If I came from a backwards, goat-fricking culture with a shite religion and then I went France and saw an awesome culture with freedoms and Descartes, I'd probably toss my Quran and head cover and pick up a baget.

Why anyone would travel to France and not assimilate in that situation is mind boggling. I guess it's religious and cultural pressures but frick, if you wanted to continue your shitty way of life, why not stay home?

The French need to spend a day in Orange Beach. Then they would see the value in overdressing.

All this makes sense, but there is a lot of evidence out there that these laws in Belgium and France only increase radicalization.

It's more like trying to fix a bullet wound with a hunting knife. It'll just make things worse.

Oh I agree. I'm just saying that it wasn't stupid of the French to welcome them in and hope they assimilate. That strategy obviously didn't work but you could understand why someone might think it would.

Laws like this won't help, but honestly I haven't heard any good ideas on how to un radicalize a population.

They'll do this to combat extremism but they'll let someone caught trying to go to Syria to fight for ISIS to come back and freely roam around. Priorities.

I don't know if it'll work for radicalization, but I once worked at a non-profit which focused partially on assimilation and immigration issues (not related to Muslim stuff).

Enclaves are such a huge factor. When you can live in a neighborhood where you can speak your native tongue, eat at restaurants serving food from your home country, watch your first language TV and listen to your first language radio, you have no reason to assimilate or even begin the process. When you add to that government offices in your neighborhood which likely facilitate our lack of assimilation (foreign language services, specific nation community outreach), you get stuff like the Molenbeek.

Disruption of that comfort level could be a start. But you'd almost certainly have to deal with some backlash. To that end, I look at the burkini thing, but I just can't see what the payoff will be.

Makes sense. Hell look at chinatowns in major cities, they've maintained their culture for over a century after we got our railroad built. But they're pretty benign and even contribute to the overall culture. I guess we just shouldn't let certain ghettos develop, but it's a hard sell with today's longing for tolerance.

ETA full disclosure, I'm about as liberal hippie douchebag as they come, I just don't see the benefit in allowing and celebrating antiquated cultures. Islam needs reform, not nurturing their old shitty ways of life.
