Yes, they are and have been for about a decade.

And Central, West Feliciana, Livingston, and Ascension are high up there as well.

And Zachary has a good amount of black people that live there. So PROOF with the right leadership and people who work with the stream not against can get shite done. EBR will never be like that. I am sorry.

Wrong, originally it was all about schools and the notion of a new city didn't come up until certain legislators told the organizers they had to have a city to get their own ISD.

And as they say, the rest is history.

The first go-round at this was all about the schools, anything else was just lip-service.

This one might have a little more mixed reasoning.

Good point.

The way I look at it, like minded people who want good schools will band together and work for them. You don't have to be white to believe your kids need a good education.

Which is why Zachary, Central, and various surrounding parishes like West Feliciana are booming.

Good schools act as a magnet to bring in families who have a drive to give their kids opportunities.

BR failing in that regard helps drive out the lower and middle classes to the suburbs, especially if paying for private or parochial schools is an issue.

ISD's flourish in Texas. They can flourish in EBR too.

I don't believe that. There's a reason schools in EBR suck, and schools in Zachary/Central/Dutchtown have gotten better and it has to do with the type of families that attend those schools.
And despite how good those schools are, they are no where near the quality of a Catholic/Parkview/Episcopal. And despite how good those 3 are, they are no where near the quality of public schools in certain areas of Texas and Virginia.

You say it's not about the schools, it's more than that, but my taxes before and after this supposed change could happen, really won't change all that much. The only thing that could change is the schools, and as I said, I don't think the upper middle class that occupy that area gives a shite about that b/c they still won't send their kids to a public school.

All I really see is a small portion of the parish taking their money and giving it to their own school/police/fire as opposed to sharing it with the city of Baton Rouge, and the city of Baton Rouge left with less money to try to improve themselves with the terrible demographics they will have, which I really don't care about either.

just seems like neither party will benefit from this. One will stay relatively the same, in St. George, and the other will get worse, in Baton Rouge.

It's not the fault of St George if Baton Rouge can't figure out how to balance a budget.

I live in the proposed St. George area.
My kids go to catholic school, as does probably 90% of the families in my large neighborhood Woodridge/Briarwood (some kind of private school), and i'd bet that number is the same for Santa Maria and the Country Club/Highland area neighborhoods.

These people are never going to send their kids to a public school here. The only way i'd even consider sending my kids to a public school, is if a scenario like this happened. a school, k-8 is built and only allows kids from Santa Maria, Woodridge, Briarwood, and the Country club, basically everything inside of Pecue/Airline/Highland. If I know only those kids could go to the school, i'd be open to sending my kids to that school. But this would be racist.

I honestly don't know what the point of St. George is. If it's schools, I just don't see the school system getting good enough for the people living in the neighborhoods I just said to send their kids to a public school. Schools are only as good as the families that attend them.

my house is just inside. may hold out on selling until after the split. property value has to go up

Given the problems in BR being ignored by the school board and others, the system will collapse at some point anyway.

I would rather take a risk with possible success than rearrange deck chairs on the Titanic after it has already hit the iceberg.

I'm not saying it is, and I dont' really care what they do.
I just don't see the point in creating St. George, other than for the school district, which I don't think anyone who makes over $100k/yr gives a shite about b/c they will still send their kids to private schools.

I could care less if the new St. George school is better than McKinley or Woodlawn. My kid still isn't going to it, just like they wouldn't be going to Zachary, or Central, or Dutchtown, or any of the public schools in Livingston. I literally moved out of Livingston to be closer to the private school for my kids b/c I wasnt' sending them to public schools there.

I've been on the St. George side, and I probably still am b/c I think it would make my property value go up, but I think it's really just about saying blacks stay in NBR and use your money, whites will stay in SBR and use their money. Then the property values in places like Tara and Hundred Oaks, and Southdowns will start to go down, and those people will buy homes in St. George while still sending their kids to the same private schools, and BR will become Jackson MS with LSU and a nice area around Bluebonnet/Perkins.

Buddy you are mixing apples and oranges.

The city of BR doesn't get a dime of your school taxes, EBR Schools gets it all.

Furthermore, while an ISD may never match CHS, Parkview and schools in Va. and Texas, if it surpasses the EBR System in s significant way and is comparable to LP, Central and others then it would be a big success.

And btw, citizens of SG aren't all upper middle class. Not all of them live along Highland Road. There are plenty of middle class and lower middle class folks too. You must not get around much.

I think this is short sighted. I have friends from college who come from extremely wealthy families that went to public schools in GA and TX.

If successful in 10-15yrs those public schools could be as good as or close enough to the private school counter parts. Again, this is something we wont get to personally benefit from them but it has other positive down stream effects.

If those public schools were close if not as good as private schools you still wouldnt send your kids there? I know I would. Id love having the extra $20k CASH in my pocket a year.

I think you are in the minority here. Yes, some people will send their kids to private schools no matter what, that's always going to happen. I grew up going to one of the best schools in the Houston area and there were still rich families that sent their kids to a private school just for the brand name I suppose.

However, the average St. George resident isn't making $100k/yr and that's not even filtering it into just parents with school-aged children.

It wouldn't happen overnight, because for starters a few more schools would have to be built, but it would be a good thing for schools in the area, which is a good thing for families in the area.

I could give two shits who gets it, I don't benefit at all from it regardless of where it goes, and I think it's bullshite that I don't get to deduct that on my taxes.

I am more than aware of this. I still say that the majority of people in the proposed St. George that currently send their kids to private schools, will continue to send their kids to private schools for the foreseeable future. Maybe in 5-10 years you get a few trickle over to the public side, but you're not going to see the private high schools have a dip in enrollment anytime soon. Maybe some of the elementary schools might.

You might not care, but to the hundreds of families that move out of EBR so their kids can go to a school in LP and Ascension certainly do care.

You are fortunate, you've told us that over and over again; however, many families, especially young families with 5, and 6 year old children can't afford to send their kids to private schools.

There are way more people like that, and not to give them an option of a good public school system in EBR when we pay for one is being extremely narrow minded.

In 2015, the median family income in Baton Rouge was $70k.
You telling me taking out NBR doesn't bump that up significantly?
