HAYRIDE

Here’s a little tidbit of information most people don’t know: the committee that worked on the St. George incorporation two years ago has not had a meeting since deciding not to appeal the rather irregular decision by Judge Wilson Fields denying a writ of mandamus certifying their petition.

In other words, while St. George might be the 800-pound gorilla in the room, that gorilla has been asleep for a good while and hasn’t shown many signs of waking up of late.

But not Mayor Broome. Oh, no. She’s determined to poke that gorilla with the shortest sticks she can find.

Hey dumb arse, what about the people who didn't vote for her? Don't make it sound like she won because she was a great candidate. She won because her opponent was a dick who openly admitted that he wanted to defund downtown projects so he could use that money out in BFE. Why would any resident of the city of BR vote for a candidate who said he'd take their tax dollars and use them for improvements outside of the city limits?

Not to mention the fact that she portrayed herself as a business-friendly moderate in the Kip Holden mold until she got elected.

The proof will be in what the BRPD is allowed to do when rioters hit the streets after the anticipated no charges to be filed ruling is handed down. I would not want to be a property owner anywhere near where this all went down. If the police are made to stand down & let the rioters do their thing, the shite will hit the fan post riots. All St. George has to do then is sit & wait for the voters to come to them. A shame but she's making her own bed.

A national merit scholar at CHS/SJA would be a national merit scholar at a decent public school. All that's happening with private schools in BR are that they're skimming off the cream of the crop that couldn't get in to BRMHS or U High. They're not doing anything unique to make outstanding students. The students they get would be outstanding anywhere.

How do you define functional? 25% of Central students can't even do math at grade level. A St George school district will likely not be any better. A borderline national merit scholar at CHS/SJA might fall below the line if his/her teachers spend their time trying to drag remedial students up to par.

She can't order the EBRSO or State Police to stand down.

The tax money used for improvements downtown and around the parish with tax money from all citizens who pay taxes not just those that live in the city.

Private school people have an inflated view of themselves. A national merit scholar at CHS/SJA would be a national merit scholar at a decent public school. They're not doing anything unique to make outstanding students. The students they get would be outstanding anywhere. If BR had a functional public school system, most of those kids would be at Tara or Woodlawn, and Catholic schools would be niche markets catering to the exceptionally devout, like they are in most places.

Wrong

I went to public school in EBR until the 8th grade. I started 9th grade at a private high school. I soon learned that my reading comprehension was comparable to our nation's average 6th grader. Up to that point, I had simply never been academically challenged in the public school system. I ended up graduating with honors and attending Dartmouth College as a national merit finalist.

Why would any mayor want to lose a significant portion of the city's tax base? Good for her, at least on this one move.

You're so ignorant of the facts its pathetic.
