BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - East Baton Rouge Councilman Matt Watson is proposing an increase to property taxes in order to help fund raises for Baton Rouge police officers. He thinks it will attract more recruits to BRPD and also curb a recent uptick in crime.

“I’m just trying to find a little way to pay our police officers a little bit more for all they do for us,” said Watson.

The 8-mil plan would raise the pay for new recruits from about $32,900 to $40,800 a year, generating roughly $15 million for the department. For an average home valued at $200,000 — if passed, homeowners would pay about $160 a year to fund the tax.

Watson says the increase will ensure the job is competitive to what officers make in other cities and will make the choice to protect and serve a bit easier. “It’s going to be a whole lot closer to the national average for what a police officers makes," said Watson. "Certainly after a couple of years they’re going to be right at the national average."

Please God let this tax pass. Those baws deserve a pay raise.

frick that.

I'm not giving the government another dime until they prove they're responsible with the money the already have. If they want money for cops, go cut something to free up funds.

Would certainly attract more people, remove the college degree for upper level positions and you would attract more

Those bawls do not deserve a raise. Why do republicans think cops should get a raise but everyone else in government should get a pay cut?

Because cops have to deal with unruly democrats every day of their lives, and every other government employee sits on his or her arse awaiting a pension for doing nothing for decades.

They make way more than 30 if you include overtime. They sign up for the job. You don’t see teachers getting a raise because they have to deal with all y’all s shitty kids.

that's a lot of money in BR for an unskilled high school dropout.

asking homeowners to pay $160/year for a service they don't use is retarded

I use the police every day, just indirectly. They go patrol my neighborhood and keep north Baton Rouge out, and I'm a happy camper. I don't have to call them up to benefit from their services.

95% of the new tax will go to lining the pockets of corrupt politicians. Fix the terrible spending before introducing new taxes.
