We do hire security. Obviously, my example is overly simple, but the point still stands. I benefit every day from police action even if I don't directly call them for an issue.

They barely have enough cops to respond to basic alarm calls. It's rare that they get time to go hunt for some bullshite. Listen to the scanner for a few hours. It's just one thing after another.

YES! They are stealing from the city by claiming far more hours of ot than they could ever physically be working (averaging at least 30 hrs/week 52 weeks/year). When they retire, that OT is figured into their pension, so they retire at the level they were making with that OT included. They’re robbing the taxpayer. There’s no way they’re actually working all of these hours. No officer should ever work more than 10-20 hours of OT in a week barring a natural disaster or other crisis.

Win-Win in my book.

Guys, listen. This isn't hard to dissect. As with any business, when good people are hard to find it's not always due to pay, it's the product. In this case, Baton Rouge is the product. The widget. When you're widget isn't something talented people want to produce, market, sell or design you're left begging for "heroes" by adding money as an incentive. Of course, those begging don't necessarily care who applies as long as they can show more people apply to spin the tax. Your tax. Your money.

Makes sense!

My thought process is this: 1. How do you prove it? 2. How does Johnny Taxpayer do something about it?

this isnt specific to BR.

the job of being a police officer is one of the most undesirable jobs out there right now

1. Less cops is a great idea. Look what happened to Baltimore when cops stopped patrolling areas that the community said to leave. Dumb idea.
2. Easy stop committing traffic violations. It’s not that hard to drive and follow the law.
3. Agree. Make marijuana legal. But most people and I say most don’t go to prison for a little amount. Just keep your shite at home and cops won’t care.
4. Liberals and media hate top of the line equipment and gear. They don’t want your average LEO looking like military guy. Training costs money. Training is not cheap. The media already claims the departments don’t need anymore money. How are smaller departments or departments in cities that have a financial crisis going to pay for said training?
5. Funny. How do you determine a “good” cop? Doesn’t make arrest? Or makes a lot of arrests? Each opinion will be different.

While I do agree with this sentiment at a very basic and shallow level, I think you're being overly cynical and selling BR short.

Despite a BR LEO job being a fairly unattractive career opportunity at the moment, I don't think a raise in pay like this proposal, will leave them attracting incompetent mercenaries.

per a guy that runs a bond business, the money is in 18-35 white males. why?

they dont fight with the cops
they show up to court
they pay their fine
they dont violate probation
they learn their lesson

I think you're underestimating BR. Your mayor and the new chief will be aligned with common goals. 8k isn't going to create a rush of experienced officers. It's going to market the newb who "gets" the culture.

I didn't vote for our current Mayor, and to say I'm unimpressed so far, is a grave understatement.

Are you saying that our new chief who will work parallel with the current Mayor is going to inspire a pitiful police force? One that is far from something worth applying to?

Because I agree, if so.
