Planning on getting my dad a watch with a leather or alligator band for Christmas, and don't know what the standard is. He wears a suit 5 days a week that is either black or blue. I would think black belt and shoes = black band. Face color is probably gonna be black with either stainless or gold bezel.

Are there any standards as far as that goes?

Paralysis by analysis.

A nice watch is a nice watch. Don't over-think it. I'm sure the giftee will appreciate it.

He's not really your dad.

Sorry, but I felt you needed to finally know.

Black alligator band and a silver or gold face goes with everything.

Just buy a nice watch. I think he can match it up.

Are you concerned with the watch metals matching up with your dad's jewelry and belt hardware?

The only standard I follow is bracelet in the summer and leather in the winter. Leather sucks when it's really hot and humid.

Bracelet can be worn at any time, you really don't want to wear leather in the Summer, which is where that sentiment comes from.

To the OP: watch straps are easily changed. If you feel like he'll wear black shoes/belt most often, then your best bet would be to go with a black strap. If he wants a brown strap, he can buy one and swap it out.

Not really. That stuff is pretty standard. Brown = gold and black = silver. I am thinking a brown band would look stupid with a black or blue suit

Instead of the watch, buy him another suit that isn't black. Also, buy him some brown shoes to wear with his blue suit. Black shoes are a no-go. After you unfrick all of that, THEN buy him the watch with a brown strap.

Yes. Match it with belt and shoes.

Would never wear watch with black strap with brown shoes and belt. SS bracelet goes with literally anything.

Absolutely should be the same color (not necessarily the identical shade).

Black shoes go just as well with a blue suit as brown. One is not better than the other.

Okay, buddy. You keep telling yourself that. Just because lots of people wear black shoes with blue suits doesn't mean it's okay. It means that lots of people don't know what the frick they are doing.

A 63 year old that has been dressing the same way at work for 40 years doesn't need style tips

First things first, get rid of the black suits. What is he a Guido or something?
