One of the survivors says that the captain told them that PFD's weren't necessary and they never even pulled them out of the storage bin.
Generally tragedies like this take a rare act of nature/ God along with some human stupidity and often times multiple levels of human stupidity.
The video from the duck boat that made it proved the captains were being idiots. First off the duck boat that sank was much further away from shore from the 2nd duck boat but both were out beyond the dinner ship. I don't care how fast a storm comes up, it didn't come up instantly. The minute the wind picked up they should have been headed to shallow water and then in. It's one thing to go out in bad weather, it's another to go FAR out in bad weather.
But the other thing the video shows is no one had on life jackets including kids. Which is stupid by the captain and parents. It's a law in almost every state that a kid under a certain age has to have on an appropriate Pf's on a private boat, in conditions like that there's absolutely no harm in requiring kids to wear their jacket.
My guess is the captain told everyone it would be ok it would be okay. Then water hit their feet and people freaked out and panicked. Which is too damn late to put on life jackets properly for 35 people.

As water began to fill the boat and people frantically screamed, 12-year-old Alicia Dennison's first thought was to retrieve life jackets for her and her grandmother.
Tall for her age at 5-foot-6 and experienced in boating, the Illinois girl reached up to an overhead shelf where the duck boat stored its jackets. She tugged again and again, but it wouldn't give, said Alicia's mother, Shaunna Cumberworth.
The water from Table Rock Lake in Branson, Mo., continued to rise and people's heads bobbed above the water as it lifted them to the boat's canopy. The windows trapped them inside, Cumberworth said.
When the top finally gave out, giving passengers the chance to escape, Alicia told her mother she felt the hands of her 64-year-old grandmother push her from below in the cold, deep water. Her grandmother's final effort propelled Alicia upward, Cumberworth said. With that push, Leslie Dennison helped save her only granddaughter, but she didn't survive. Dennison was among the 17 people killed when the tourist boat sank Thursday afternoon in a storm.
"She said if it wasn't for her grandma, she wouldn't have made it," Cumberworth said. "She thanks her grandma for sacrificing.

Duck boat that sank in deadly accident is raised from lake
quote:
The duck boat that capsized and sank last week on a sightseeing cruise was raised from a Missouri lake Monday, more than three days after the accident that killed 17 people near the tourist town of Branson.
Footage from Springfield, Missouri, television station KYTV showed a crane attached to a barge pulling the duck boat from Table Rock Lake and another boat pushing the vessel toward shore.
The boat , which was submerged in 80 feet (24 meters) of water, went down Thursday evening after a sudden thunderstorm generated near-hurricane strength winds.
quote:
Divers have recovered a video-recording device that was aboard the boat, although it's unclear whether it was working when the boat capsized or whether any data can be retrieved, including audio. The recorder was headed to the NTSB lab in Washington, D.C.

None of those aboard were wearing flotation devices.

Anyone take an offshore survival course where you’re strapped into a “helicopter” and capsized in a pool?
I've done several HUET training sessions over the last 15ish years, and I fricking panic for a second EVERY time, everyone does..Something different happens every time I take it and that is exactly the point of taking it

Even though you know what is going to happen and are mentally preparing for it still totally disorienting. I always point this when people post things about why someone couldn't get out of something when submerged as the result of some type of accident.

Have they released the names and ages of the deceased?
Did the capt make it out and have they identified him?

Was posted earlier in the thread. LINK
I havent seen anything about the Captain. I believe he survived, but they are keeping his name quiet for now. He will likely be under a lot of scrutiny once he fully recovers.

That's going to be interesting if proven in a court of law.
