I thought the Knights were founded because Masons being a British started group were very anticatholic. There are catholics in masonry now, there weren't 100 years ago.

Catholics are not allowed to become a mason. Masonic teachings are contrary to the Catholic Church. Most masons are unaware of this. They do not realize that it is structured like a religion. Most do not believe it and deny that it is a religion.
There are some good men in the masons, but the deeper one gets into it the further one removes themselves from God. It happens in a subtle way.
This explains it for a catholic.

The Knights of Columbus was founded to give Catholics something similar to the Masons to join. Masons have never barred Catholics from joining (I’ve sat next to quite a few) but the Catholic Church has some hesitance to allowing their subjects to join the Masons. To understand this you have to go a few hundred years back in history.
During the times of the crusades an order of private Christian knights rose to power. Their primary purpose was to protect travelers/crusaders to the Holy Lands and to act as a bank for their wealth. They were in effect the first banks. As an organization that had both a monopoly on medieval banking and the most highly trained/equipped “private” army of the time, they were able to amass considerable wealth. This was the Knights Templar.
Their wealth far exceeded the Catholic Church and most nations at the time. As such they became the primary source of funding for France’s wars. King Philip IV of France, whom had all but kidnapped the Pope and forced him to rule the church from France, connived with the Pope to declare the Knights Templar a heretic organization - which meant that neither the King nor the Pope would have to pay their debts to the Knights and the church could seize all of their lands (it didn’t help that a member of the royal family was denied entrance to the order either). This happened on Friday, October 13, 1307 (which is one of the origins of Friday 13th being considered unlucky).
The Knights were arrested and tortured while forced to sign bogus confessions. Many were tortured to death.
Many of the members fled France to either England or the Alps. Those who fled to the alps would integrate themselves there and form a banking system that is still today considered to be quite powerful (the Swiss banks). Those that fled to England would quickly find themselves integrating with a trade’s union - the Masons.
The English and European Masons as a trade union had their own history up to that point (that’s another story) but it was after the integration with the remnants of the Templar Knights, and the fact that the King of England had removed himself/Endland from the Catholic Church, that the Church has never allowed the Masonic order to be legitimized.

Here’s a pic from the St. James Lodge #47 website, the oldest Masonic Lodge in the Baton Rouge Area. Looks like a picture of well-connected, influential men that are masters of the universe if I’ve ever seen one.
It also just looks like they rounded up a bunch of virgins at a costume party for a group photo.

My grandfather was a 33rd degree Mason and one of the most Godly men I have ever known. To his dying day, he never renounced God.
If you want to read an interesting story, Google “The Day They Stopped The War”. The story took place in St. Francisville. Then go visit the Episcopal church cemetery there.
