It depends which part of west Texas. Towns like Abilene, Amarillo, San Angelo were about 5-10% hispanic. The rest were mostly Anglo southerners. Many from Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri.
Many southerners came to Texas after the civil war, devastated and in search of a new home. This is the case with nearly all of my ancestors that didn’t come straight to Texas from Europe (which are only a few)
My dad is pure southerner. I have traced all of his ancestry. Born and raised in San Antonio
You know now that I think about it I can see this....The area between San Antonio and El Paso does have a certain southern type feel to it....the people anyway, not so much the terrain but the people do indeed seem like they could be from Alabama or Mississippi....

Certain parts of Texas got more people from states like Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and others for more people from states like Tennessee, Arkansas, and Missouri or Kentucky.
There was a confederate flag painted on the Laredo airport until 2021 when the city council voted to remove it.
I checked out the Facebook comments and the they were all opposed to it. “This is our history!”
All of these people were Hispanic.

DC is where it is today because the founders wanted the capitol to be in the South. However, the definition of that term changed between 1790 and even the Civil War. Today, it is not Southern. The map and culture changed too significantly.
Remember, MLK gave his speech in Washington and announced that he would "go back to the South with a renewed hope".

The south Texas border counties voted unanimously to secede. Votes like 193 to 3.
There weren’t even slaves down there.
They were loyal Texans. More loyal than many of the German Texans. Although new braunfels voted to secede, they are an exception.

It's a southern city that has northern influence. JFK pretty much described it the same way
I'm sorry, but if you have magnolias, you're a southern city.

West Virginia was part of Virginia until the Civil War.

That plus its relative location to the Mason-Dixon line is part of what begs the question

no one has ever talked about their barbeque.
If you base this on BBQ, you lose the argument
The Caribs (Indians that inhabited the Caribbean Islands) introduced Columbus to BBQ. He took it back to Europe, so any BBQ would cover the US and no specific state or region.

Today it is southern, historically not really.
Which is interesting as it’s usually the opposite?

I can say tis with absolute certainty - If the South ever rises again, Richmond, VA will in no way, shape, fashion, or form, be a part of it. Strangely enough, the only part of the former southern state of Virginia that holds to true southern values is that portion that seceded from Virginia and became West Virginia.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but "The South" is not defined entirely by geographic location. Texas is Texas and is decidedly not southern. Oklahoma makes a better case for being truly southern as evidenced by the fact that iced tea is served in Oklahoma, by default, as sweet. Maryland, like Kentucky never seceded and was a border state with sympathizers for both sides. Today's demographics in Maryland are decidedly NOT Southern. And to my fellow Kentuckians, I hate to admit it, but our Bluegrass State is about 50% Southern at best. Eastern Kentucky, despite the accents and Rebel flags, has a decidedly Yankee bent to it. The state only truly becomes southern once you get west of Elizabethtown and over into the Pennyrile region.
And finally - Virginia. Old Dominion is lost. She will not rise from the ashes. There are signs of southern life there, but only in the westernmost part of the state near the West Virginia and Kentucky borders - and even those parts require "CPR" to keep a Southern pulse detectable.
Maryland WAS a Southern state, as was Virginia. Sadly, neither of them fit the bill any longer.

If the American economy ever tanks a lot of people will be going to other countries.
The people who stay are the real Americans. Likely the people whose ancestors have been here a long time. No where else to go.
Then we will see which states are southern or not!

I am old enough to know where the bodies are buried. Kids today could care less about their people and what they actually did to create the USA.
