re: Maryland will forever and always be a southern state

My ancestors are from western Maryland. It’s about as southern as a place can possibly be. Unfortunately, Baltimore and Fredrick are liberal cesspools and greatly outnumber the western part of the state.
Specifically, my mother’s side of the family had a farm on Polish Mountain which it outside of Cumberland. It’s absolutely beautiful up there. There are dairy farms and suck all over the place. Very mild climate. Summers are just perfect. You rarely need AC. Their property had an artesian spring on it. Best water you’ve ever drank in your life. Deer that weigh 200 pounds. Lightening bugs (fireflys) outside in the evenings.
I miss that place.

I've seen the map that is the original Mason Dixson Line. It was at a exhibit in Williamsburg.
It's about an inch high, and very long. Done in pencil. Houses and trees featured.
So different from what I expected and nobody else seemed to notice how speciall it was.

The real question is what is West Virginia?
Not a real state because, if secession is unconstitutional per the Supreme Court, it was created in an unconstitutional manner.

If you failed miserably in 1865 what makes you think you can do it now?

Culturally, not so much. Most of the people who have migrated to Maryland are from New York and Virginia. DC dominates the area, which means non-Southerners from all over the U.S.. Baltimore is a rust-belt city.

Bill Russell use to refer to Boston as “up South”, because of its racism.

Funny that you mention this. I just went down a family ancestry rabbit hole and have quite a few ancestors that came through Maryland as you mentioned. They either married a spouse there, came in there or both from Nova Scotia/Acadia or "New France". This branch went all the way back to early 14th century central France.

They certainly didn't think so during the civil war.

My first ancestor in the colonies, William Causey, migrated to Maryland. He fought under the Swamp Fox, then was rewarded with land in Mississippi. He had a plantation near Berwick, MS, called Causey Springs.

If you have done your ancestry and you aren’t Cajun but descended from the people that settled the colonial and frontier south, you will likely find you have ancestors that started in Maryland before settling west.
Not unless you're Catholic.
Most everyone in the modern South would find that their ancestors emigrated to Virginia and worked their way South and then West...and they were all protestants.

If you didn't secede you aren't a southern state. That is the criteria
It really is this simple.

LOL you are on a predominantly Louisiana/LSU board with a bunch of Catholic coonasses bud. That religion dominates South Louisiana.

Has OP ever been to Maryland? Ain't nothing southern about that place.
If you want to be from the South, move to the South.

Marylanders want no part of being called southerners

I was referencing his original post where he specifically referred to "non-cajuns".
The idea that most people in the South today are descended from people that emigrated to Baltimore is simply untrue.

Lots of Scots - Irish entered the USA at Maryland. Pretty sure they were SIAA / SoCon (roots of the ACC and SEC). If your roots are in the South should not be a surprise they started in Mayland and you may still have family there.
If memory serves, Bardstown, KY was the first non European diocese in the USA and the Kentucky bourbon industry was fueled by these immigrants.
I tend to say YES but Baltimore and DC are more Yankee now.
Until the B1G added the Terps they were way more SEC than B1G.

Maryland has a lot of cultural South in it.

You don’t have any English?

Baltimore is certainly more southern than Dallas or St Louis. Its almost as southern as New Orleans, Atlanta and Houston.....about on par with Tampa today as far as southern goes.....
