The Marine Corps is cutting all military occupational specialties associated with tank battalions, law enforcement units and bridging companies, the service announced Monday. It's also reducing its number of infantry battalions from 24 to 21 and cutting tiltrotor, attack and heavy-lift aviation squadrons

This doesn't bode well in the future for my old squadron. They are last in line to convert from Harriers to the F-35B.

I can only imagine this move by the Marines is a move to get back to their traditional role of a purely amphibious force geared toward seizing and securing a limited beachhead. There’s an old saying of “if you want to conquer an island, call the Marines. If you want to conquer a continent, call the Army”.

Damn. That sounds stupid. So fire support will depend solely on jets and rockets? Can't imagine that a lack of cannon artillery will turn out well in a close nasty fight.

I'm not Earth, but to say it's inferior is an understatement.

Not so much because of the weaponry, but more because of the C2 integration. Or in China's case the lack thereof.

This is the Type 96 Main Battle Tank. It’s the backbone of the PLA armored forces.

*laughs in Army M1A2C*

Yeah. The Type 96 is dated. It’s really a 2nd generation MBT. The Chinese also have the Type 99 which is a 3rd Gen MBT....

...I’d still take my old M1A1 any day.

So are they going to go with some up-gunned LAV's? I remember in the Gulf war when we had to "borrow" an Army brigade of M1's because we were still equipped with the old M60's.

Like most of their technology, it’s copies of others. When it comes to tanks, the Chinese have copied Russians since the founding of Red China in 1949.

I’d put their armor on par with Russia, which means its effective when used en mass. Tank for tank though it’s not on par with tanks like the Abrams and Leopard II.

You should. It's far superior in just about every metric.

That’s a good question. This move means the Marines won’t be able to operate as a combined arms force.

The first tank I was on was a M1A1 Heavy Common in 1st CAV. It would still kick arse today but the A2s, A2 SEPs, etc blew it away. No having to fight the reticle when inducing lead.

The CITV was a huge upgrade.

It’s been over 20 years since I unassed an Abrams for the final time. I’d give my left testicle to do just one more Tank Table VIII.

Do tanks shoot nukes? If not we don’t need them for the fight with China.

Nothing against the USMC, but they treated their tankers like red headed step children.

Truth.

USMC only needs light armor like Bradley’s and such for infantry support

i might be able to get on board with getting rid of tanks, but cutting manpower, artillery, and air-power is a head scratcher
