This photo kind of reminds me of the infamous MC-130 crash at FOB Q-West back in 04. Good friend of mine had to write that report. Yikes.
I was the last plane in before the crash. I reported the hole in the runway, guess the report didn't go anywhere. I also went back a day or so after and the briefing was still incorrect, told me to land in the hole. Saw the MC carcass.

How the hell does something like this happen?
This isn't really my lane as I don't do much dissimilar training. The only airplanes I fly in close proximity to tend to be other C-130s.

The refueling boom has got to be at least 100 ft long, right?
Maybe the 35 came in to hot and overshot?

The hoses can extend to about 80 ft I believe.
It's not a boom though. Those are on KC-135s and KC-10s. Typically only USAF acft use booms and receptacles (UARRSI). With USAF acft, the refueler is the "male" (with the exception of helo's) and the receiving acft is the "female".
Navy, Marines and NATO acft all use a refueling piece that, while I don't know the name, makes the receiving acft the "male" and the refueler the "female", with the drogue being the "female" piece.
Drogues and MPRS pods have been added to KC-135s for use on NATO acft, etc.

How are you going to get it out of the field without cutting it up and putting it on trucks?
Everything is ball bearings these days.
