Scientific American

quote:

Marijuana consumption by Colorado high school students has dipped slightly since the state first permitted recreational cannabis use by adults, a new survey showed on Monday, contrary to concerns that legalization would increase pot use by teens.

The biannual poll by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment also showed the percentage of high school students indulging in marijuana in Colorado was smaller than the national average among teens.

According to the department, 21.2 percent of Colorado high school students surveyed in 2015 had used marijuana during the preceding 30 days, down from 22 percent in 2011, the year before voters statewide approved recreational cannabis use by adults 21 and older. The first state-licensed retail outlets for legalized pot actually opened in 2014.

Nationwide, the rate of pot use by teens is slightly higher at 21.7 percent, the study found.

Fascinating stuff happening out west.

When I was a kid, I bought my weed at taco bell. Alcohol was much harder to get. Living in Colorado, and going to dispensaries, this isn't a surprise at all. It's a very good system.

I am thoroughly convinced that the big reason why this isn't taken up nationally is because of the LEO/Prison/Court/Legal lobbies. They don't want to kill the golden goose.

having a hard time believing this..

If I've learned anything from this past election is to not trust the polls, media, or the government. A "drop" of 0.008 (136 students out of 17,000 who replied) isn't much of a drop off at all.

Also, 17,000 out of 237,000 high school students who replied is only 7%. I'd be willing to bet that at least 25% of the 93% of people who did not reply do use marijuana.

Bingo! This is the same reason why the drinking age at 21 is stupid. Teens seek out things that are rebellious. If you normalize it, they do it less or more responsibly (because you don't have to hide it anymore).

Do you have some other data that we are missing?

You should be thoroughly convinced, because that is why.

Why?

Kids raised in countries where alcohol is introduced early abuse it much less. Prohibition doesn't work. It creates a stigma that attracts young people. Treating a plant like its a plant turns out to be logical and effective.

Yup. Same reason why abstinence only sex ed doesn't work. Preachers daughters always the sluttiest

If this trend remains, it is proof positive that legalization and regulation maybe a better way to handle marijuana use in the US.

It also could have the effect of actually turning weed into a gateway drug when it otherwise wouldn't be.

The govt lumps pretty much all illegal drugs into the same category, so young, dumb, impressionable people try weed and determine that it's no big deal. This could, could, lead to them coming to the conclusion that other, harder, drugs are also no big deal because the govt treats them all the same, so they try them. Maybe they get hooked, maybe they don't. And maybe the population of people this applies to isn't that big anyway, but it's possible.

During prohibition, alcohol use went up across America. So that law did the exact opposite of its intention. There was also a lot of contaminated batches sold. With weed, its looking like the exact same thing. Purity is better and youth usage rates are dropping.

And it connects people to the black market that otherwise wouldn't be...I think that's the biggest thing.

Beyond that, there was a study in a medical journal published days ago, that said drunken accident rates dropped in states with medical marijuana.

It appears that with access to marijuana, people in those states are drinking and driving less. So marijuana regulation is having a correlation between other substance abuse issues.

This has been predicted by the pro legalization lobby for years. Another reason is there is no need for an underground market if it's legal Thus, much harder to obtain for those not of legal age
