This shouldn't surprise anyone. The dark areas are where a shitload of poor people live. And most of those people dont give a frick about plastic recycling or anything like that.

Sea turtles are much more threatened by cigarette filters than straws, and the vast vast majority of cigarette filters that end up in the ocean come from China and India.
