For more than 25 years, many developed countries, including the U.S., have been sending massive amounts of plastic waste to China instead of recycling it on their own.
Some 106 million metric tons — about 45 percent — of the world's plastics set for recycling have been exported to China since reporting to the United Nations Comtrade Database began in 1992.
But in 2017, China passed the National Sword policy banning plastic waste from being imported — for the protection of the environment and people's health — beginning in January 2018.
Now that China won't take it, what's happening to the leftover waste? According to the authors of a new study, it's piling up.

I love this line of thinking.
We can't fix all of it so we shouldn't fix any of it.
The US still churns through a startling amount of single use plastic. Why not just try to be better about that? Shouldn't we be the city on a hill for the rest of the world?
Plus, this was already covered, but we export metric shite tons of plastic to these countries because we know its cheaper to give it to them than to recycle it here or dispose of it properly. So these maps/stats are a bit misleading.
ETA:
Google tells me the US exported 157,000 cargo containers of plastic waste to other countries in 2018. And that doesn't include China, who doesn't take it anymore.
That is fricking absurd. So despite us being lightly colored on that map, we still contribute heavily to the issue.
Carry on.

Didn't the US, up until recently, "recycle" our waste by sending it to China, who would then dump it into the ocean?

I think it's absurd for anyone to believe China was actually recycling anything we sent there in the first place

Which one of you fatties who pitches your plastic bottles in the bed of your jacked-up truck to blow out in the ditch, downvoted this?

Asia is a total dump with no regard for the environment at all. Been over here for work and that graphic is absolutely true.
Yet the US is supposed to destroy our economy and way of life to stop climate change

India... big surprise.

What's your point? I think anyone with a brain would know this. I assume you're using this to illustrate how dumb libtards are for caring about plastic when Asia is way worse. Just because something does something worse than you doesn't make what you do ok.

And what about the plastic not set for recycling? Where does that come from?

Our plastic water bottles are being dumped in China so we can virtue signal.
Well...that used to be the case. Now, China says frick you. BTW, their "change in policy" came under Obama. It wasn't his fault, I just wanted it noted before some arse hat decided to blame Trump. Basically, they saw this industry had very little upside and kicked it to the curb. When contracts end, they are typically not being renewed. Now, India imports quite a bit of plastic waste. I would imagine that they will pick up the slack.

Yes, I know. But that doesn't change the fact that Americans' plastic waste is trashing other places.
Keep chugging from those plastic water bottles while making fun of the yellows and the browns who wade through our refuse.

Are we the ones dumping it?
If not, we aren't the main problem

We are selling plastic to be recycled, recyclers are dumping it. The US companies have started exporting elsewhere and opening more facilities stateside
quote:
The good news is that markets are already adapting, to an extent. New processing plants — some backed by Chinese investors, no less — are opening up state-side, which means at least some demand for recyclable waste is returning to America.
