I believe some restaurants in New York and Seattle tried it and sales declined due to high prices and they switched back.
Danny Meyer who started Shake Shack and owns several famous high end restaurants in NYC tried this several years ago and he couldn’t get it to work.

What would people tip for two draft beers priced about $8 each? Total about $16 and change.
I’d go somewhere that doesn’t charge $8 for a beer. Jesus Christ.

Complain to management before you do this. Unless the server was a total frickup, you're costing them money to work, as they have to tip out the bussers and the cooks even if you left them 0.00.
When I go some place to eat, the last thing I want to do is personally take on the payroll responsibilities of the restaurant staff. I’m not going to spend my time dealing with personnel performance issues with management either. I don’t want to manage a restaurant, I just want to eat there.
I’m going to pay for the level of service I receive. What I’m not going to do is pay a 20% tip for a meal I had to eat with nothing to drink because I had bad service.

This new screen flip to select a tip % for countertop service phenomenon has become one of my biggest pet peeves, and I still rarely have the guts to manually select 0%.
I bartended & served for years back in the day, so maybe it’s just hard wired in me, but I think it’s total bullshite.
Select 0 and then select a printed receipt and then flip back.

Paying tips for good table service is great. If all someone does is hand me a hamburger through the window at Sonic, not so much.

Took all of my grandkids to Stone Cold Creamery for ice cream the other day.
Before I could even pay they turned the screen around to show me the gratuity options 15%, 20%, 25%, 30% ... on a $112 tab, for ice cream. They had simply scooped ice cream and shoved it in paper cups ... it was outragious. They never stepped from behind the counter and honestly, they were not very personable. Eight grandkids and me, small cups each with one topping mixed in ... maybe $15 worth of ice cream and toppings wholesale total.
Absolute insanity.

I’ll give a dollar or 2 at sonic if I they bring my food to the car stall. They used to come take the order too I think, but now that’s done via speaker. I think. It’s been ages since I’ve been.

Ordered a pizza, small salad to share, 1 coke, 2 beers. Local joint. It was over $50 with tip. We knew going in it would cost more and made the choice. But don’t do it often.

Doing half what they did before and you’re tipping. That’s part of the problem. Tipping for all the stuff that never was a thing you’d tip before.
When it goes from gratuity for great service to expected everywhere for everything, it goes from being a tip to being a tax.

I tip because it is the system we have here. But I think it is messed how the customers receiving the service not only pays for his meal but also is subsidizing the employees of the restaurant only when he only pays his staff very little. Quite the scam that was created.

It’s been a long time since I’ve gone to Sonic. And it was the drive-thru so no tip. I just meant back in the day when they took orders and delivered. My daughter worked at sonic during big school and made bank bc her Sonic paid min wage (some pay just the sever wage) plus tips. But that was when they took orders, too. $1/$2 adds up.

service staff needed a living wage are balking at tipping with no actual service being delivered.
The thing with service staff is that they also bitch a lot when they get a very small or no tip, but you don't hear much about those one or two tables that were very generous.
But for the people bitching about tipping, I am convinced some people are not happy unless they have something to bitch about. If leaving a tip is that much of a financial burden then stay at home and cook. One of my friends, he and his wife cook two or three dishes every Sunday to be their meals for the week. Now that is a good way to save your money.
Make some patties to keep in the freezer, you can have burgers once or twice, use them to make hamburger steak, etc. For those who are upset about tipping, do that and you will no longer have to worry about tipping again.

My policy is that if the service I receive exceeds the service I would get at Chick Fil A, then I will consider tipping. If equal or lesser, then no tip. It's honestly pretty fail proof.

What ever happened to a tip jar?

I tip whenever I feel it is warranted and in an amount that I feel is warranted. Always tip at the traditional places like restaurants/bars but still based upon effort and not just because. But I will tip my AC guy because he’s reasonable and comes out quickly, the high school kids that fix the pizzas where I go even though it’s takeout because gotta love the work ethic of these kinds of kids, anyone who comes to do a service at my house and can tell they know wtf they are doing and give a shite how well they do the job. The recommended tip charge on cruise ships plus extra on the side if warranted. The company doesn’t pay them shite and they bust there arse for months at a time away from their families but they make a ton more than if they stayed in the Philippines. Those kinds of situations.
I tip for work ethic, skill, and service level. Just because there is a tip screen doesn’t mean you’re entitled to one.
