I love David Choes art. I understand why he's filthy rich.

I recently watched that documentary about the art heist of some museum in Boston. The Rembrandt that was stolen was really one of the very few paintings I've ever seen and been like "Yeah, I can see why that's worth so much money."

I went to a few museums in The Netherlands and was able to see some Rembrandt art IRL. I'm not an art guy at all. My walls are white with nothing on them but seeing his art in person really changed my perspective.

Pineapple is better.

Some students put one on a table. The GALLERY enclosed it with glass thinking it was an art installation. The actually gallery people were fooled.

I took art appreciation in college, and it was very interesting. However you figure out quickly that that industry is built to promote itself and like most academic subjects, it's been over analyzed to death.

Art can be that, or it can be completely abstract. It can be whimsical, it can be fantastical.

Art is what speaks to you.

To me, photo-realistic painting is only interesting in the larger historical narrative of the advancement of the medium. Once we reached the point in art history that we achieved the requisite knowledge and skill to accurately reflect the real world, continuing to do so is no longer pushing the envelope in any meaningful way. At that point, it's less art and more just... technical?

To me, art is anything created with the intent to evoke an emotional response. Good art does so well; bad art does so poorly.

I vacillate between wanting to draw a distinction between art and décor. I've seen stunningly beautiful maps, exploded diagrams, technical drawings, etc, in my lifetime. But that gets into a messy debate concerning whether something must be intended as art, or whether something can become art independent of the intent of the creator.

You're going to get shite on as being a pretentious a-hole for this, but it's a great post.

Well, I'd have the same nihilists view of life I got tricked into murdering my beloved cousin, convinced others to murder the wife and children of my best friend based on the lies of witches that were using me for their entertainment. Although, to be fair, when you said this you haven't fully realized the ruse yet, but you the empire you lied and murdered your way to lead collapsing all around you.

Nah he's 100% right and anyone who give him shite for this is just an a-hole. While photorealistic paintings/ drawings / sculptures etc... are certainly impressive and take tons of time into achieve that level of skill, it almost always lacks creativity. You might as well just look at a photo. Art would be very boring if all artists tried to copy the world exactly as we perceive it.

Artists and Chefs both seem to have huge egos.

Neither does anything life changing, life saving or truly relevant, but they still think people need to worship the group they walk on.

You can get the same satisfaction from a Sidney Laurence as you can a Van Gogh, unless you're a dealer.

Photo realistic images usually rely on personal emotions and feelings to "get"

Where abstract art relies on critics to tell you what you see.

The only "ART" I understand is stuff like music (classical, jazz, rock, country, etc), film/photography and some paintings and sculptures.

For instance I consider Monet to REAL art and of course there are many others.

I think some people just throw shite together and some pinhead somewhere labels it as "fresh and new"

So you appreciate the craft rather than the art. I do too but if art never evolved from the 18th century it would be irrelevant.... I know, it's irrelevant now....

You are over thinking it. Go to any museum. There will be a cluster of people around anything with female breasts. The rest of the stuff will barely get a glance.

Agree. Drawings that look like a photo are lifeless and uninspired imo.

You can paint a scene that is far from abstract that conveys emotion, or weight of the moment etc. paintings/drawings that are intended to look like a photograph fall into the “why bother” category for me.
