If I look at a piece of modern art and I can't tell which side is up, then it is just wasted paint on canvas.

One of the best trolls ever was when some kids put a pair of glasses on the floor of a MOMA display and the pretentious assholes took the bait

Obviously I wasn’t talking about someone with enough taste to proudly display such a fine example of art.

You mean you don’t understand why this masterpiece sold for 120k?

You just don’t have any sense of sophistication, intelligence, or culture. Go back to your trailer park and eat your McDonald’s while watching Roadhouse, Trumpkin

Does the piece fit within a larger whole or are you viewing it out of context that the artist intended? Can you identify the emotion the artist put in to their work? What medium is it? How about colors, are they unique?

it looks like i could paint this if i had a stroke.

maybe that's a good name for this painting........."stroke".

For me the art has to have some kind of meaning. Sure it can be a realist depiction of a landscape or person but it can also be a surrealist image of melting clocks and impossible geometries.

I do struggle with the modern and postmodern “art” that rebels against any sense of classic aesthetic or meaning.

I love Van Gogh and most Impressionists and Post Impressionists, but the rest of it is mostly meh to me. But to be fair, there is a lot of popular music that I hate also.

I understand your disdain for abstract art & preference for realism, but photo-realistic paintings annoy me just as much. I don't want a painting to look microscopically exactly like a photograph. What's the point?

Whereas, I prefer an inexact impression of a subject. DaVinci's Mona Lisa and Michelangelo's David sculpture are just off enough in realism to make me see a master at work.

i guess it's like going to a concert to watch your favorite band. if they sing the songs exactly like on the album, i love it. if they don't, the concert sucks to me.

I will say, I find most paintings, abstract or realistic, are bought by the wife to match the furniture.
