We live in Houston, along with all members of wife's side.
Child #1 will be here for this holiday season. Typically, wife & I travel between Louisiana & South Texas to make all parties happy. With kid(s) entering the picture, what's the play?

Start a rotation. If they don't like it, invite them to your house.

Two options:

1. Odd years, visit Family A. Even years, visit Family B.

2. "Hey everyone, if you want to see us and the kid, you're welcome to come to us. If not, see you another time."

This is what my sister does. One Christmas in La., on in Ca. She's in Ca. for Thanksgiving every year. That's always fun for her. She goes to our SIL's house along with her MIL and FIL and their respective significant others.

<--- single and no kids. I get to watch football.

We set the schedule early. Not all family is visited on "the day." Also, we host a lot now. my grandparents are getting up there in age and don't host, so it's left to my aunts and uncles who cook shitty food anyway. Hosting lets me set the time, dates, and menus.

With very young kids, I don't think its unreasonable for them to come to your place.

Our sitch is worse. We live in one state, my family in another, my wife's in a third. We have Cribmah at our house then visit both families after that.

We have only one kid, though, and she has always been a very good and content traveler in the car.

This. We live in Tampa and picked 1 or 2 holidays to head back to LA for my side of the family. When the kid got older we would ship her butt off to my sister for a week or 2 in the summer so she could catch up with her cousins and my mom and dad. As the teenage years approached my sister would send one or two of her kids our way for some summer time. It's not as bad as you might be thinking.

Our families only live an hour or so apart, but we live in a different country. I'm not looking forward to a cross ocean flight during the Christmas holidays with 3 kids. But it isn't up to me.
Regarding family split, we just work out ahead of time which days we will be where (5-6 days at each family). We're lucky that our foaks aren't too selfish or particular about where we are on which days.
