SIAP. Searched and didn't see.

WKRN

Alexander Kearns was home from college at the University of Nebraska when he became interested in investing. His family said he downloaded the Robinhood app and began making trades.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WGN) — When a 20-year-old Illinois man opened his trading app on his phone, it showed him close to $1 million in the red. Soon after, he took his own life, but his family says he actually didn’t lose the money at all.

quote:

On Thursday, the 20-year-old looked at his account on the app and saw a negative $730,000 balance.

“It’s actually a user interface issue and when Alex opened his app, he saw his cash balance was $730,000 and when you look at the screenshot, he had $16,000 in his account which was his true saving,” said William Brewster, Kearns’ relative.

His family said he took a screenshot and wrote a suicide note. His body was found the next day. He had thrown himself in front of a train.

I've never used this app. Has anyone ever had this happen before? Not to the tune of 730k, but in general. Sad story. Only 20 years old

Me, I would have done some quick investigation before going the suicide route.

That's the problem with successful suicides; they can't be reversed.

You have to be a fricking idiot to not understand if you didn't invest it you didn't lose it.

Yeah that seemed a little extreme to me. I can understand the initial shock of being 3/4 million in the hole, but I think most people would've tried to calm down and do a little digging before stepping in front of a train. Can't tell from the article if it was actually an issue with the app or just the interface was confusing and he read it wrong

Seems like a knee jerk reaction. I would just delete my account and move along.

He downloaded the app and began making trades? He had to have opened a trading account and funded the account in order to make trades.

Something sounds weird about this story.

Bankruptcy court is just a tad bit less painful than stepping in front of a fricking train. Dude had to have pre-existing fricked in the head issues...

Seems like he’s either a fricking moron or this is a shitty murder cover up.

At the very worst you can declare bankruptcy, right? It isn't ideal, but it's better than dying. This is sad. Guy probably had other shite going on.

You can lose money you didn't invest with some types of options trading.
