Man fatally crushed by elevator in Manhattan building

A man died when he was crushed by an elevator inside a Manhattan building Thursday morning.

The 30-year-old man was on an elevator with two people inside the Manhattan Promenade on Third Avenue in Kips Bay around 8:45 a.m., sources tell PIX11. When he got off, the man fell through a gap, and became lodged between the elevator door and the elevator shaft. The elevator then crushed him, sources said.

FDNY Deputy Chief Anthony Arpaia told reporters that the victim was exiting the elevator — occupied by seven people — at the lobby level when the car suddenly dropped toward the basement, causing him to become stuck between the elevator car and the shaft wall on the first floor.
