"So far its held up," said Thor McCaughey

While homes all around his are flooded - some to the roof - McCaughey's property is dry, thanks to some smart thinking and preparation

"A lot of things that can't be replaced and I needed to protect it," he said.

McCaughey brought in some dirt to build this levee around his home almost a week ago when he learned the area would likely flood.

"Dump trucks for 24 hours just came in and it was a miracle - a miracle," he said.

With the rising water from the Sabine, it was a waiting game to find out if his hard work would pay off - and so far it looks like it did.

He should have gone with a moat to better protect him from zombies.

I saw this on the news. It's great that he has the financial capability to do something like this and that he didn't lose his home. With that being said, why in the hell would you build in a area such as that?

Why the hell is he going to remove it. Seems he may be living in a flood prone area.

Pretty smart. He could sell the dirt back and recoup some of his expenses too

That's pretty awesome, I think it might have ran him around 10 thousand for 90-100 yard of dirt truck. SUre he might have saved his home but other people would get more insurance money.

I applaud his ingnuity but wouldn't it have been cheaper/easier to move everything out of his house vs. build a levee?

I know of a couple of houses in MS that have a similar dirt damn built around the house permanently. Not that close to the house but around the property. When the water comes up they close off some drainage pipes under the driveway by the road and run a pump if any water gets in. High and dry while everything else is flooded. Probably paid for it with their Flood Insurance Premium savings

10 grand vs letting the house flood? I'd imagine he came out smelling like a rose.

It wouldn't as been as cool and interesting as building a levee.

An area that only floods during a very rare event?

I'm assuming he's got flood insurance based on my previous post. And he stated his concern was the contents he couldn't replace. If that's the case, seems like moving them out would be the most cost effective and sure way to keep it dry.

While it may not have been cost effective in a pure money sense, not having to be removed from your home and dealing with the repair of a completely flooded house to the roof as some were in his neighborhood, it may be worth; especially if you had the disposable income to do such a thing.

Why would someone live right there?

Isn't that the river that that Toledo bend lake dumps into?

Looks like the entire area is a flood zone anyway.

What's the pluses of living in that area? Not like there is some big industry that has people flocking to live there?

People talked shite about Nola being in a flood zone, but this is a million times worse. At least there is a reason people would want to live in NO, that place seems like the type of place you'd have to pay people to live.

We're assuming his makeshift levee holds.

I don't doubt it.... I was just spitting off at the mouth... Or keyboard

I'll be honest and didn't pull it up on the map.

I was sorta going off of some of the stuff I read in the Toledo bend lawsuit thread earlier.

I'm sure there is 'industry' in the area, mostly plants I assume, but there are plenty of nice places around LC that I'm sure aren't in a flood plane that are close to these plants.... Am I way off base?

And I know the little old 'uptown' like area in old LC was pretty nice and charming the only time I've been to a house there.
