Why would this pilot take this route in a restricted airspace. The normal route is further south of Donetsk

It was only restricted at 32,000 and below. The plane was above that.

That may or may not not be, but can you 100% rule out that may happen?

No. No one can at this juncture. That is why all evidence that is being presented must be treated as suspect.

quote:

I have yet to see any proof that a missile was fired - it may have been, and if there is proof, then my bad.

The most damning evidence that a missile was fired came from the separatists themselves, who were bragging about bringing a plane down on social media. They have been doing this since they shot down a Ukrainian military plane just a few days ago. No other plane came down yesterday in that area, so it strongly suggests the Malaysian flight was targeted and fired at.

quote:

But, on the other hand, if it was an actual shootdown, who is to say that it was more than an "accident" (ahem) or not?

I believe it was an accident in the sense that the separatists did not mean to take down a civilian passenger jet. It does no good for them to kill civilians. They've been shooting at Ukrainian military planes for some time now.

ETA: This article from a few weeks ago describes how Russian separatists took control of a Ukrainian military outpost equipped with BUK missile systems.

And here is another thought. The plane was over 17 years old and had well over 75K flight hours. Now, whats to say that there was some catostrophic failure, in say a wing spar or something, that led to breakup in flight? (And don't even say that kind of stuff doesnt happen..)

Several news outlets are quoting US intelligence sources as confirming that a missile was fired at the jet.

What plane was 17 years old?

It was a 777. Those are newer planes.

Let's hope it truly was some accident then and not an attempt at something bigger. Also, anything this adminstration gives out has to be suspect.

The Ukranian gov't has also released intercepted calls of the rebel leader (a high ranking Russian intelligence officer) talking to a Major in the Russian military confirming that they shot down a plane and then confirming that it was a civilian jet.

Not much of a way the Ruskies can spin this.

I mean, are you surprised planes get shot down in active war zones?

You mean 295 passenger airliners? Yes. Yes I am. The sheer irresponsibility of that moment when considering the technology used is mind boggling.

WAPO:

KIEV, Ukraine — Pro-Russian separatists fighting in eastern Ukraine pledged safe access Friday for investigators seeking to enter the crash zone of a downed Malaysia Airlines jet, international monitors in the region said, but the Ukrainian government said the rebels were still keeping all but local emergency workers away from the site.

Very true. I find it interesting that Russia is balls out against our worthless "sanctions." And then this happens that supposedly has Russian hands in it. If that is true, then the outcome may be inevitable. There may be some reason for our buildup in the region after all.

If Russia is found to have a hand in it, then what will the only recourse be? More sanctions that aren't working? A nobama slap on the wrist? Nobody seems to recall how Putin pushed the edge several months ago.

Those who know history also know how WWI started.

Putin does not give a frick who is in charge in other parts of the world. He will do what he wants. He believes in expanding Russia back to their imperialist empire days.

What he does not realize is he is hurting his nation on a larger economic scale. Lots of the Russian wealth has already left the country along with lots of its educated citizens who never go back. Also lots of outside investment is thinking twice about Russia.

This.

I realize some of it is in jest, but the love for Putin on this board is pathetic. Many on this board that scream 'MURICA are not shy in their love for a sworn enemy.
