Major ice ages could have been caused by tectonic collisions
LINK

At geological time scales, what really controls the climate isn’t the atmosphere, it’s the ground. Most of Earth’s carbon dioxide is held underground, in reservoirs of natural gas and oil, but also in the rocks themselves. As the planet’s tectonic plates slide and churn against one another, they bury carbon deep beneath the surface while exposing fresh rock that will soak up more carbon over time.

That carbon can be liberated in large volcanic events, causing mass extinctions. But the process can also work the other way, where rocks pull carbon from the sky. A new study from MIT researchers claims that Earth’s last three major ice ages were caused by collisions of tectonic plates bringing fresh, carbon-hungry rock to the surface. Over millions of years, these rocks sucked up enough carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to cause temperatures to plummet and send glaciers marching outward from the poles.

The process is simple. Much of the rock in Earth’s mantle is composed largely of silicate, and when exposed to the air, it will naturally react with carbon dioxide, forming new minerals that sequester carbon as a solid. This process is much more likely to occur in the tropics where temperatures are higher and frequent rain will wash soils away to expose bare rock.

Interesting idea. Exposed rocks sucked up enough carbon to change the earths atmosphere and trigger an ice age.

This is huuuuge!

I don’t know what any of that said or means.

I could have sworn that the ice ages were caused by a sharp decrease in cow farts.

Sooo

Why does a lack of CO2 lower temps ?

Anyone that cares, already knows about this scenario

Because free CO2 in the atmosphere keeps the planet insulated.

The problem with this is there are multiple extinction events and most of them don't coincide with major tectonic collisions.
The collisions were not quick time events. Look how massive the plate movement off the sw coast of Sumatra was, but it didn't change 'rocks' even though there was a major wrench fault movement.

I thought ice ages were made by ice.

This sounds like some MIT graduate student dweebs observing phenomena in a manipulated micro enviornment, adapting some real arcane mathematics, and extrapolating to a planetary scale involving deep, geological time. Not saying they’re wrong. Only, more research and government grants needed.

DNR...but global warming is still caused by humans, and use of fossil fuels, right??

Just making sure

So we just need to expose rocks and we don't have to take part in the green new deal? I'm down.

Bull shite. The amount of CO2 in the air does not affect climate change. Just ask the poliboard

Continents have been moving for billions of years and still are today. When they stop, we have problems that are a lot worse than half a degree change over 50 years. Going to have to try harder than that to make CO2 the boogeyman thermostat of the planet.

Lol I dont think anyone is hoping the planet stops functioning as it should.

Over millions of years.

Millions

And the editor throws in that humans have warmed Earth in 100 years.

Therefore, although it's true that natural forces do cool and warm the earth over millenia, we've made changes that while temporary, will make Al Gore look like a prophet to posters who don't read links.
