Madisonville driver hit car, grabbed deputy’s genitals in road rage incident

A Madisonville driver was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly hit a car intentionally in a road rage incident and then assaulted a sheriff’s deputy, according to the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office.

Officials say Matthew Swire, 29, was driving southbound on Highway 190 at around 5 p.m. when he rammed his car into another vehicle.

After the crash, Swire got out of his vehicle and began pulling on the victim’s door handle, trying to get inside the car, according to the Sheriff’s Office. During the encounter, he screamed racial slurs at the victim and hit their car several times, authorities said.

Swire later resisted arrest after deputies arrived, kicking an officer and grabbing their genitals, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Swire was taken into custody and booked on a slew of counts, including criminal damage, assault, resisting an officer, sexual battery, battery of a police officer and hate crimes. He did not have insurance and was not wearing a seatbelt, according to officials.

“Violence and hate-fueled behavior have no place in our community,” Sheriff Randy Smith said in a statement.

Swire was being held at the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center. His bond amount had not yet been set.
